Is a Poulan 25cc a weaker engine?

Default Is a Poulan 25cc a weaker engine?

Hello,

I have been reading some posts which implies that Poulan engines are not good candidates for conversion as they are highly restricted engines and would require heavy modifications.

I have a Weed Eater Featherlite FL20 with a Poulan 25cc engine (the one with the backplate hold with 2 screws only)

Is it worth converting it or should I better look for something else, I have converted some engines but never ported or any heavy modifications on them.

Oddy,

There's nothing wrong with converting that Poulan 25cc, if you have something that needs a lot of weight in the nose and has a lot of wing area (like, say, a big Cub.)

However, if you want to fly 3D with an Extra, you'll probably want to pick an engine less massive.

It all depends on how you want to fly.

Better off with a higher quality engine. I do a lot of yard equipment repair, and those Weedeater brands are the cheapest made out there. They usually aren't worth repairing and I throw them in the trash. They are also low on power once converted for airplane use, unless you get into a lot of porting.

As others have mentioned, I did not have as much success with the Poulan weed whacker engines as some of the other brands. They just don't have the power.

There's like a 19, 21, & 25

I just pass them up.

one thing is they are light compared to anything else, if you want a guinea pig to try porting on they aren't bad for that. I have a bunch of them but haven't gotten the ones I have converted in flying planes yet though (will this summer). There's several sizes of the things, 18, 21, 24 and 25cc, the 18cc is the lightest as I have had one stripped down for gas/glow with prop and it was right at 2lb... I degreed one once and I think it was at like 115 degrees exhaust duration where it should be near 150 degrees, but I think that was the 24cc which is labeled as a low emission engine...

I did a couple 26cc from blowers. These have 4-bolts on the backplate and the muffler is secured with screws. I set them up for Rcexl igntions and installed a larger 2-screw carbs. These engines also have the advantage of having a long shaft so the prop hub is easier. I traded one to a guy from my club for a G-38 with a bent crank. He installed it in a BUSA biplane, http://shop.balsausa.com/product_p/449.htm. He is very happy with it. That biplane is for the .60 to 1.08 range of glow engines. These are not powerhouse engines. But, in the right application they work out OK. They are not high quality. They were cheap, the blowers were cleared out at about $30 so I bought several. I have not messed with the newer 2-screw type so, I have no feedback on those.

I have some success with 30cc POULAN, but as stated earlier, they are heavy, and do have some problems. However, the bset use I have found for them is using the con rod and bearings for the RYOBI. It takes some machine work, but really gives you a beefed-up conrod and bearing. "SEE AN ARTICLE WITH PICTURES" I posted under "ANOTHER RYOBI". Flathead
