I wont to do some stainless welding for a gas turbine I am gonna build but when I weld I get brown residue all around the weld, are the gas flow rates wrong?(pue argon at 10L/min) I am using thoriated electrodes on DCEN.
Thanks

Brown Residue - is it kinda chunky or more like a powder coating? Probably need more gas and/or larger cup to give more shielding. Moving air can disrupt the shield, stay away from fans, open windows etc. Might be using to much current also. If the piece is small enough that it gets red while welding you will need to set it on a heat sink to keep it cool, or flood it with the shield gas. Assume you are using the correct filler wire for the type stainless you are welding. Hold the torch over the weld after you cut the arc so that gas covers the weld til its cools below red heat. The weld itself should be shiny, there is always some discoloration in the vicinity or the weld.

Its powdery residue, I am using a small nozzle I think this was bad advise from local agent because when i read up on it they said use as big a nozzle as you practically can. And from what you say i am definitely getting the work to hot. You say heat sinks of copper work. I will visit the local non ferrous metal works after christmas.
Thanks.
Happy holidays

Do a search on rcu for Frank Bowman i have read here that he will make rings if you cant find any. With the bearings, if you cant read anything off them, then you should be able to take the measurements and get them from just about any bearing shop.

thanks for the info. i called frank and he did not have anything that would work but said he would be able to cut me a set if i gave him the dimensions. as for the bearing it is not a standard bearing. it has a groove in the ouside race with a ring around it that "keys" it into the block( looks like it doubles as a thrust bearing/washer) the number is FAG 522157. so far i have not had any luck in finding a match. the guy who is doing all the milling and converting it is now waiting on me to find parts (he cant find any either) does anyone know of any sites that may be of some help? thanks for all the help guys!!

I cant find them either, i think you might have to take out measure them and get a different brand (FAG is a mamby pamby brand anyway
)

ok guys i got another one for ya. (sorry not related to welding) the guy converting my engine shot me an e-mail and said the engine is all re-assembled and running. BUT there is what he called a severe vibration while running. it ran smooth in the chainsaw and we are thinking it has something to do with the removal of the flywheel. it has EI on it now so there is a nice looking hub where that used to be. anybody know what to do or ran into this problem? i need to ratify this problem so i can get the engine one the plane and order my muffler from Mr.Lambert.

I noticed my homelite run's with bad vibration when the prop is mounted so that it is inline with the cylinder at the top of the stroke and it has very little vibration when the prop is mounted perpendicular. also EI

ok, the vibration is still there, timing is good all the internals are good. does anyone know if mccullochs are externally balanced or how to balance this engine out. here are some pics of the conversion. any help would be greatly appreciated. mr. lambert, on your mculloch did you have any balance issues?

GOOD NEWS, the guy that was converting my engine found the problem. as it turned aut there was no balance isssues it was a fuel problem. it seems there was a leak in the intake manifold causing the poor performance. without a muffler and not completely tuned the engine tached 7600 rpm with a zinger 20X10prop. not bad imo
so all is well in rc wonderland i appreciate all your help and hope to mount the engine this week and get dimensions for mr.lambert for the muffler. thanks for all your help guys!!!
