Please help identify size of this McCulloch Trimmer
Hello,
Please help me identify who makes this engine for McCulloch and what displacement is this engine. I’m guessing 32cc, but the nameplate suggest 38cc. Does anyone have any experience using this engine and what could I expect for performance.

RE: Please help identify size of this McCulloch Trimmer
Everything on there except the carb housing looks exactly like the motor I'm putting on an air boat I'm building. I believe (because I have not yet heard otherwise) that McCulloch made their own motors. They are not ryobi's or homies in a yellow housing. My trimmer was an Eager Beaver 282 (great name for a boat too!), and my lawnmower shop told me it was a 28cc. www.carrprecision.com has a little bit of info and a dimensioned drawing of the McC's, and claim they are 'powerful and high torque', but only list a 28cc and 32 cc. I would guess too from the nameplate that it's a 38cc, maybe an older model, but a lawnmower shop could likely confirm that for you. It's hard to find much info on these old trimmers since they discontinued them.

Jim,
Do you have any experience converting one of these 32 cc McCulluch engines. I'm guessing that it would perform much like a twin ring Ryobi?
Perhaps you may have further data.
Thanks
Poppy

RE: Please help identify size of this McCulloch Trimmer
I've only converted two of them. They were done the C-H way with C-H ignitions. They have J&A mufflers held on with the original spring. One has a cylinder modified by TKG. It has a couple hundred rpm on the stock one. The modified one was originally a 28 but I put the modified 32 jug on it.
I changed the carbs to 1/2" venturi Walbros.
They run a 18-8 Dyna Thrust between 7500 and 7700 rpm.
I think the blower model had a bolt on muffler but not sure?
They were not made since the late 90's.
You might get hooked up with some parts from someonre on here?
They are sort of a torquer engine. The size of the ports would lead you to think differently but they are just 18-8 material. They must have mild timing?
The only cutting was to the plastic back plate.
Enjoy,
Jim
