Default poulan 42 coil bracket

Has anyone had success with mounting the coil onto a poulan 42 and running with a mag system on the engine? Have have made searches and scaned the forum and haven't found any success stories for how to mount the coil. I hope I get some responses with "how to" descriptions and/or pics of a good mount - I don't wont to spend the money to go with an ign. system.[&o][&o][&o][&o][&o]

COME ON NOW - - SOMEBODY MUST HAVE A WAY TO MOUNT THE COIL - - SHARE THE KNOWLEDGE. I've got two of the Poulan 42 engines I'll be mounting in a big twin engine WWI bi-wing. I actually need the extra weight of the flywheels to help with the balance of this short nosed creature. Can't stand the added cost of TWO ign systems.[]
HELP PLEASE!!![&o]

Hello Sides,
I have some ideas for the 42cc coil mounting. I beleive that the 46cc has the coil bolted to the cylinder like a Homey 45cc. If the 42cc coil position is the same as the 46cc, slightly to the left of center, in front of the flywheel we can make a 1/8" aluminum mounting plate with two tabs bent 90 degrees at the bottom. By using extra long bolts to attach the crankcase bottom at the flywheel end, they will protrude on either side above the motor mounts. This is where you attach your mounting, using lock nuts. Make your mounting plate over size at first and bolt it to the engine, making sure that you have flywheel clearance. Locate the correct position for the coil as it was in the saw. Then mark, drill and tap the plate. Mount the coil using short standoffs and lock nuts. Now you can disassemble and trim the excess materal from the plate. If the coil isn't located as stated, make the necessary changes to accomadate it. Good luck.

I too had that same problem after getting a slightly used saw. I decided to go to wacker engines and get a glow adapter. Still need to get the prop hub and I saw the other day that they now make one for this particular motor.

Hi,
The hub that you are talking about is for a flywheel version. If you go with the mag it will be much cheaper and only weight about 8oz. more then all of the CH components. I am attching some rough drawings of two simple brackets used to mount the coil.

Thanks for the replys and a special thanks to Dave Wallace for providing some sketches of potential design solutions. To help better define the problem, I am attaching some picts of the engine. Any more comments?[img][/img][img][/img][img][/img]

P.S. the bolts are not the ones for the engine case. Those pictured are over length for the engine unless the mount plates and the coil bracket require some this long.

Hi sides,
Your welcome for the nice comments. My ideas will work, but you may have to trim the fins over the screw holes and behind the coil position. You will need to buy from Wacker or make two beam mount plates and get new 10-24 cap bolts. That is if you use the basic coil bracket. Good luck.
