Default New engines

Well I picked up a McCullough Power Mac 310 today for $20 and have a Stihl 030 (45cc) on the way also. Question for you Mac guys, is the 310 needle or roller bearings on the crank. The 310 runs well and starts on the first or seconds pull but needs a little carb work (easy to do). I can always convert my Poulan 46 and use the Mac for what little I need a saw for. Of course having a nice little 34cc Mac engine wouldn't be bad either.

Have another engine on the way! A 49cc goped engine from that "auction" site. Even includes electric start. For the price, I don't think it can be beat.

Good find, it looks like a Tanaka. If it is, you made a real deal.

There are a few more of these on there as well. I figured I'd give one a try.

Check out the bypass ports on the Stihl. These are nicely contoured and aimed. There is a definite reason Stihl so far outperforms the other equipment of the same displacement. To get the most out of the Schnuerle design, the ports must be aimed and the piston domed.

Mac 310 uses needle brgs. Same as quadra 35-42 and US engines.

Well my scooter engine came today and I'm a little pi$$ed that they did not include the electric starter! Over all the engine looks ok. Has a huge rotary barrel type carb on it. I get the number and post pics and info later.

bdtsr,
I have an engine exactly like your scooter engine. I haven't had time to work on it yet, but I did find a big bore Walbro carb, that I will probably use instead of the carb that came on the engine. I also found out that the engine runs backwards, if the prop is put on the flywheel end. I guess that I'll probably go with an electronic ignition setup, instead of trying to remount the coil to change rotation.

I just checked mine as I thought it might run the same direction as yours. Mine runs in the correct direction (flywheel end), should have remembered this as I ran it Saturday. I just held onto the engine and used the pull starter. A little gas in the exhaust and she poped off for a few seconds. Seemed pretty good. I'm going to make a flat plate mount and prop hub as soon as I get the materials. BTW, my engine has the exact same exhaust port dimensions as my Stihl 030 chainsaw engine! Of course I'll have to make a muffler too, but that can wait while I use the saw muffler for testing.

I didn't see the scooter that my engine came from, but the fellow that owned it said that the clutch and sprocket mounted to the flywheel. He also said that the clutch and chain were on the right hand side of the bike, which would make it clockwise rotation from the flywheel end. I would like to see pictures of your prop hub and mount when you get it finished. I have a lathe at home, and access to a milling maching at work, so making the parts won't be a problem.
