Our Home Depot is selling the Mcculloch 32cc weedwacker for $39.95. Is that engine worth converting? Will the stock carb work ok? Who sells parts for this engine, ie the prop adapter and engine mount? I'm looking for a reasonable performing engine to put on a Great Planes Big Stik. If some has pictures of this engine, please post them. I've done a 45cc Homelite, so I'm not a total rookie.

The engine makes a pretty good model conversion. Very little cutting to do. Get the parts from Carr Precsion

Chuck, I looked at my Home Depot and can't find that trimmer or anything that price. What is the name on the trimmer?

I don't remember the name on the trimmer, it was last Thursday. I did call the store today to confirm that it was indeed a McCulloch 32cc and the price. It was a mini display of may be 12 of them out in an aisle. Home Depot is probably trying to get arid of them since it is winter here in Minnesota and they don't want to carry them to spring. If you'd like, I may be near the store tomorrow or Tuesday and could check for you. I'd like to hear from Carrprecision first on the cost of the conversion parts before buying the engine. Hopefully I can contact him tomorrow.

How do these compare power wise to the ryobi 31cc?

Chuck, That would be great if you would let me know. From what I saw on the Carr Precicion web page he gets around 60 dollars for his kit. I do all mine with electronic ignitions from CH. Usually I get new short blocks from Echo (same as BME) or I find broken trimmers and take the engines. I do make my own parts though here at the house.

I have like 8 of the things and two I have converted using the C-H parts. They run perfect but have no more power than my Homelight 30's. One of the converted ones was a 28 that someone gave me with a broken jug. I got a new 32 cylinder from C-H and made a 32 out of it. I have four that I use as weed whackers. I like them as weed whackers.

The engine were not made after 1998 or somewhere along there. Some company from tiawan bought the company and started making the chain saws again with some improvements. Mabie they have now started making the weed whacker again?

Local Home Depot is selling a 31cc Mac model MT700, SKU 084931828735 for $39.00, marked down from $59.00, marked down from $??. I checked the HD website but this model wasn't listed. Perhaps various models are being sold in different parts of the country, but checking http://www.mcc.mtdproducts.com/servl...?ID=178&CAT=18 only shows 31cc Mac models.

These are the old style Ryobi engines (or clones). I posted or added to some one else posts on this last week. The original add came out Thanksgiving weekend.

The chain saws bigger than the 38cc look like Poulans? I have a couple 14" and a 18" 38cc and they look like the pictures.

Since MTD absorbed most of the lawn equipment companies, most of their chain saws are Poulan based. Weed Eater was a Poulan product. The basic Homelite engine is still part of the product line and is used on the Ryobi 30cc and has been upgraded. McCulloch is using a combination of engines depending on the end use. Engines I have observed are from China, Tiawan, and USA. Many of the machines are assembled in Mexico. Engines I have dismantled appear to be of good but not industrial quality. I presume the 31 and 32cc machines being sold at give-away prices are new/old stock that are coming out of the warehouses. MTD is apparently disposing of superceeded machines to make way for next year's models. From what I have observed, I assume most of these will be coming from China. There is still Stihl, Kioritz, Makita, and Zenoah!

For those of us not so familiar with engine manufacturers how can it be determined who made an engine? Stampings on blocks or other parts? Characteristics like muffler and exhaust placement (side/rear combinations)? Straight vs angled plugs? Other??? Any good picture references available?

The newer engines have stickers stating country of origin. I think the Japanese machines have always been marked.

Well, I made a mistake, I went to buy the weedwacker this afternoon and it is a 31cc McCulloch, not a 32cc as I stated before. My apologies for the mistake. I also understand that this is a rear carb engine, which won't work for me.

Yep, it's a rear-carb (Walbro WT628A), rear-muffler engine. Looks like the Ryobi engine pictured on the Carr Precision site: http://www.carrprecision.com/Pages/prod02.htm.
