coil problems

I found a Mccolloch Proscaper 28S in the local trash bin. (wife said leave it)
well I put it in the garage and left it for a few hours. I went back out and looked at it for a few min's seen that the throttle cable was snapped but other than that no probs. I primed it with the gas that was in it. pulled it a few times and she jumped to life!!! SWEET.
well I removed the engine from the pipe, grip/ kill switch. pulled her threw a few times and she jumped to life!! sweet.
Well I removed all the weedwacker garbage and started trimming the excess Aluminum. I removed the coil to gain access (I was gental with it.) well I trimmed and then I re-installed the coil mag pickup clearance .010 +-. I hooked the crank up to a cordless drill and spun it @ some good speed and no spark. the primary coil isn't grounded or anything. is there any way to check it using a meter? or should I start spending $$ on it?

I was spinning it the correct direction...
However I was spinning as fast as my cordless would go... I tried spinning it with a old corded drill. The coil jumped to life!!!
So… Learning Experience. Must spin fast!!!
I'm an A&P, and when Overhauling Magnetos they must be op checked on a machine. The machine has a variable gap (simulating spark plug gap) and a variable speed drive adaptor.
All magneto's must have a coming in speed of 100rpm and a gap of 7mm. what this means is that spinning @ 100rpm it must jump a gap of 7mm. Of course their is no published "coming in speed" for a weed whacker!!

It is not fool proof but sometimes the resistance on the primary side of the coil can be measured. Of course if it is open it is bad. If the windings are shorted a false reading is likely.
I remember measuring the speed of the cordless drill at 1200 RPM and it barely starts a Ryobi engine.
