I have an 18cc Homlite weed eater that I converted sometime ago and I was wondering what could be done to give it a little more power. I converted it all myself and I'm running a 16x8 prop. I was thinking of running a 15x8 prop just to get a little more rpm out of it. Also I was wondering about advancing the timing on the fly weel. Can this be done?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Yeah, you can try advancing the timing to see if it helps. It can either be done with an offset key, which you can either make or you might find at some of the suppliers for the little scooters and "Go Peds". You can also just clean the crank and flywheel real well, and put it on without the key; just using some loctite. It won't move. A larger bore carb than stock, and a free flowing muffler with no baffles and two large outlets will help as well. You will probably find it will like more like a 14 x 8 prop, and the APC props are efficient and good to use on small motors.
This size motor doesn't usually make a good conversion because of it's poor power to weight ratio, but hey, tinkering is fun anyway right?
Have fun,

I'll give that a try, thanks for the info.

Aviator,
Check to see if the coil is attached to the cylinder. If not you will need to buy electronic ignition or use gas/glow fuel mix. Many Poulan saws don't have bolt on carb assemblies. This makes it harder to attach the carb. I have a 40cc pro that has the coil attached to the cylinder, but it took a CH ignitions manifold to connect the carb. It is a good engine, made in Sweden with a chrome bore. It may be better to keep it as a saw.

The Poulan 38cc I have from a chain saw does not have the coil attached to the cylinder, so it will have to be as Dave said, either electronic ignition or glow operation. Doesn't matter to me as that's how I do all my engines anyway. This engine will have a MUCH better power to weight ratio than your 18cc. I'm running a Poulan 42cc right now, and it's about equal to a Fuji 43cc that costs $400.00 bucks.
