Default Poulan 42cc

Hi guys,

I realize that this is not related to RC conversions but thought this might be a place to get an answer to my question. I just bought a Craftsman chainsaw with the subject engine. It started up easily and runs good but the idle mixture is so rich that it will not idle unless the idle stop screw is run in so far that the idle speed is so high that the centrifugal clutch will barely disengage. The Hi and Lo needle adjustments look like plastic rods about 3/4's In. long and maybe 1/8 In. Dia. with a very fine spline on the outer ends. Does anybody know what kind of tool would be used on these adjusters and where it might be available. I would appreciate any and all information that anybody might have. [][]............RJ

JR,
Use a dremel tool with a cutoff disk to cut slots accross the ends of the plastic adjusters, then you can use a small screw driver to adust thwm.

Since you may not want to bother taking the saw apart to cut slots in the needles, you might try slipping a snug fitting brass tube over them to turn them. Sears, or a Poulan dealer might even have the tool needed to borrow or buy.

Try a small 12 point socket from a 1/4 inch drive set.Use the screw driver attachment and you might have to just tap it on a little to get a snug fit but dont tap to hard.

Thanks guys for the ideas, I finally got hold of the right guy at the Sears store and he knew right away what the problem was. He said it took him a couple of years to get the right tool. It is less than 3/16 In. in Dia. in order to fit through the holes in the plastic case. We got it tweaked up alright but I'd sure like to have that tool, he wasn't too helpful when I asked him how I could get one like it. []..............RJ

You will have to pull the top cover off the case (three screws), to even see the adjusting thingies.........RJ

I found a long piece of tubing the correct size and dinged the end with a hammer from the side. Works great on the engine that I have.
