The Homelite 25cc engines have a bridge in the exhaust port; the 30cc engines do not. All you have to do is pull the muffler and look into the port.

A Homey 30cc will seriously outperform a Ryobi.

Is there any way I can tell if the homelite is a 30cc from the outside before I tear it down? I have it already and I have the flywheel turned down. I got the 18x6 prop for the ryobi and gutted the muffler and put a bigger outlet in it I will see how that all works by the weekend.
Most of the 30cc have two rings and there is no bridge in the exhaust. The 25 is one ring and a bridge exhaust.

Thanks,I have two 25's it looks like one still trimming grass, the other is for r/c experimentation. I will keep my eye out for a 30cc though. what do you do to the homelites to make them run well?

Taking the muffler off isn't exactly tearing it down.
No other way I know.

in reply to Bill Rademacher:
If you want to see greater profmance in your Ryobi try a Xoar 18x8 beech ply propeller, and realy not a bad price. Check out Xoar List.

Just to the lower right of the intake /carb the cc's are cast into the cylinder of most Homelites. All of mine have a 25.

Mounted the modified muffler and the 18x6 prop and fired it up, I got the carb adjusted pretty close I dont think it is perfect but close. There is a little hesitation when you go from about 1/4 to full throttle. it seems much better than the 16x8 prop and the stock muffler. I couldn't get a RPM reading though because it was getting dark and there wasn't enough light to take a reading. I may try a bigger carb just to see what it does. It has a #27 carb on itand I have a 32 and a 34 I may bolt on to see how it runs with more carb. I am going to try to post a picture of the muffler. I gutted a stock muffler and drilled out the hole where the 3/8 tube came out and inserted a pice of a transmission filler tube that I would say is about 9/16-3/4 I didn't really measure it.I ran it all the way to the bottom of the cannister and drilled it full of 3/16 holes about 20 of them. it sounds alot like the DA 50 I heard run the other day.

Ha! Transmission filler tube. I like the way you think! You're going to do well with these conversion engines.

Have fun,

You know how it is you work with what ya got! It is a shame to waste perfectly good scrap metal! And since I got this motor out of a discarded weed wacker It only seems fitting to use other discarded materials. I even got the 18x6 prop from a friend who had it left over from an old plane he no longer has. I am wondering, how much prop can one of these engines handle well? and also what models have you used these ryobi engines in. I am leaning towards a 4* 120 or maybe a 120 size stinger or maybe a 3d type plane like a Giles.

I personally only use the Ryobi for a scale airplane, (and one that doesn't need a lot of power), that has a narrow cowl like my Tiger Moth biplane. There's just too much of a power advantage with other engines for me to really get into the Ryobi. But it's cheap, easy to find and convert, and a person can have a lot of fun with them.

I have a ryobi in a 4 star 120 turning an 18 X 8 prop, ch ignition.

most planes with 1000 square inches of wing fly relatively well. Dynaflight Chipmunk, Four Star 120, Supersportster 120 etc

There is also a SPAD plane that hovers with a stock ryobi, inthe spad forum.

I started up the ryobi and checked the RPM's today 7440rpm with a Zinger 18X6 wood prop Throttle response is good, except when it idles too much then it needs a little clean out before you rev it. It doesn't stall it just loads up a bit if it idles more than 5-6 seconds. Think I should try a different prop? Bigger carb?

I was looking through the gasser stuff on spad to the bone but I don't know which plane it is you are refering too that is why I asked for a link to the plans so Idon't have to spend all day looking through them.

That's a good size prop and a reasonable rpm for that engine. It has classic signs of being too rich at idle. Lean the "L" or idle mixture out until it hesitates or dies on acceleration, then richen it back up just until it responds well. You will then have to readjust the high speed mixture as one affects the other.

(Note that turning the mixture screws in leans and out richens.)

I am running a 18 X 8 topflite prop.

I don't think I am getting near 7000 rpm though.

Still seems to have plenty of power.

I sent the engine to Roy Sholl at S&S macine and engineeringto have an electronic ignition set-up installed. I was actually working with roy as he developed the kit. I should have it back soon to see how it works. I also purchased a 30cc homelite to try next. I ma hoping it will make even more power and the ignition from the ryobi should work on it as well, although I may just get anothr one so I can use both engines at the same time!

well I got the motor back from Roy a while back and finally got it mounted up in the thunder tiger Giles 202. finished up the plumbing and wiring and filled the tank up with some Cam2 race gas and 50:1 oil mix. I fired it up the other day and it was looking good but it started to suck some air, and I was getting bubbles in the fuel lines causing it to studder and not rev high enough. So today I fixed the fuel line filled it up again and tried again.everything was sounding good RPMs were high but I didn't have a tach so not sure where they were exactly then bang and everything stopped!!!!
It cracked the block right at the flange where the cylinder bolts on. I have another new bolck so I will probably bolt this cylinder onto it and try this again. At least it happened on the ground. Maybe I should have some more material welded onto the block in this area?

I easily hopped mine up. Took it off, sold it and used an engine that weighed a lot less and put out a lot more power.

Funny you should say that.... When I just opened this thread, I was thinking "Hop up a Ryobi?"... "Jack up the spark plug and put a different engine under it, then change the spark plug"...

Well, I have one or two, and a lot of people have good fun with them, but they surely aren't powerhouses! As I mentioned earlier, they work well for a narrow cowl scale installation, but that's the only place I would use one. Just my opinion...

Now, what would you use to fill the void around the counterweight? I don't know. It would need to be very lightweight so as not to throw off the balance.

Thats at least 3 or 4 cc volume if you can fill it up and stuff the case. That will increase the velocity inside the case and increased case velocity means more power.

Gluing cork is a common method with two stroke dirt bikes, snowmobiles and outboards.

Using a surface-gap plug will smooth out the combustion chamber and give you a slight compression boost if available in that size.
