GP 90" Cub w/weedeater 18cc combo
I got an 18cc weedeater little engine from a friend and would like to put it in the Great Planes 90" Cub. It has a 7.3mm venturi Walbro (WA-226, I believe) carburator on it that all it needs is a repair kit and will start right back up. I am thinking about getting an electronic ignition for it to eliminate the magneto all together. Is this engine even worth trying on the Cub, for a relaxing Sunday flyer?
I have not even started taking in apart to cut it so, I would like to get an idea if it's worth the effort.

Is that a 90 inch wingspan Cub? It will need to be lite for a 18cc engine. That is a nice little engine I hear. RCIGN1 would have a good ignition for it. His ignition is one of the best! Capt,n

Yes it's a 90" wingspan, GP says it flies with a 0.60~0.90 two stroke so I figured this little engine should have enough pep to take it up nicely. . . I am also considering a BUSA Eindecker 90 (7 1/2~8lbs). I have a OS 0.90 2 stroke still in the box but want to try the weedeater first to see what it can do. If I'm satisfied, I'm might try one of those BCMA 26's on a BUSA Citabria Pro that I'm building in the fall.

Try doing a search at top of page. Seems like I read some good stuff about that 18cc engine. There is more than one version of that engine I think. Regards Capt,n

Can you tell me what size (venturi) Walbro will do what you are saying? The other thing about this particular little engine is that the exhaust is held by springs, how would you attach a bigger exhaust? I got a link from another one of the guy's posts here that has all the Walbro models and you can shop for a particular model and all its parts and since I'm comfortable using Walbro, well the rest is spoken for. . . I read a tread here where they talked about 10mm~11mm +. The carb that's on it right now is a Walbro W 226, which has a 7mm± venturi.

The Featherlites really come alive with a bigger carb and different exhaust. I've converted over a dozen.

You may be able to take the exhaust you have and gut it out, and add a tube for a exhaust outlet while closing up old outlet. Silver solder should work to keep tubes in palce. Or braze it. The springs should hold it on ok. Good going....capt,n

I have been messing with the toro 25's, and the mcculloch 25's....I have no experience with the 18 you have, but unless it is VERY powerful for its size I think you may be a little lethargic on the power.
I believe at that weight and size of airplane even the 25cc "magneto/flywheel" would only fly it scaleish....
However just to see if it could be done I flew a giant size lanier stinger weighing 14 pounds with a stock toro 25 cc...
Takeoffs and climb outs were SCARY underpowered, once airborn it was flyable...ULTRA TAME ...It was kind of fun because you had to run it all the way down the runway wide open building speed, then ease it up and make big slow turns too atitude...
Like all area's of our hobby its all about what YOU enjoy doing....
