hi folks,i have gotten an 18cc poulan,it came off a weedeater featherlite,i was wondering if anyone has used this engine, how much power does it make, prop, and how big of a plane will it handle? it is an awful good running little engine, and pretty light seeing as i have not even put it on a diet. any hop-ups would be helpful as well. all help appreciated. thanks

I have one of the 21's converted and I also have one (Still a weed whacker) that my wife claims as her's... They are friendly engines and work very well as a weed whacker. I also have another that is a hedge trimmer. I consider it superior to my Homelite hedge trimmer that is only a 16 cc.
But compared to some of the other weed whacker engines available, the 18 is just too small to overcome the weight penalty of the ignition. My 21 runs a Dynathrust 14-6 at 7000. So you can see it doesn't make it to the ".60" glow engine status.
The reason for all this is apparent when you tear it down and compare the port sizes with those of the Homelite 25, Ryobi 31, Zenoah 23, and many other engines. It is designed as a weed whacker and to be run wide open throttle all day and for this not to hurt it.
Carr Precision advertised in the back of RCM has the back plate mount and hub. The existing muffler is small enough to just gut it and use it as is.
You may be able to find a model that can carry some weight and that doesn't need much power where you can utilize the engine?
Good luck,
Jim

I converted an 18cc Poulan Featherlite for a buddy of mine. It is on a balsa USA Eindecker with an 80" wing span and weighs 14 lbs. The Poulan is turning a 16 x 8 APC at 5800 RPM. with the stock exhaust. There were no modifications done to this engine other than the conversion. This engine is flying the plane in a very scale like mannner.

i have an older pica aeronca,1/4 scale,it is 105" span, and should come out rtf at about 12lbs. is this little motor enough to pull it? the kit said a .60 would fly it scale, but don't expect to do much with it. i would really like to run this engine on it,as the cowl does not offer the room for anything very big, what do ya think?

Folks,
I also acquired the 18cc sized engine off a featherlite weedeater. I carved it up and also made up a muffler. I haven't ordered the C&H ignition yet.
I was looking at building the Adrian Page GEE-BEE R2 for this engine (supposedly flies on a .60 2-cycle, but has major wow factor with a .90 4-cycle).
Based on previous comments thus far, now I'm not so sure.
