Hi,

I wondered if anyone knows where I might find some ignition coils for CD ignition cheap. My little 16cc Kioritz came with a small, separate coil, not the big type with the iron core. However, when I check the Echo website, that is not what it shows for my motor. It shows only the big iron core types. Strange. All the other Echo engines I looked at on the website also seemed to use the big coils.

The little coil I have works well, and I would like to find a cheap source for this type of coil or something similar. For example, I am now converting a Homelite and will need a coil for it, and I have three more engines of various types I will be doing soon. To me, the CH Ignition complete setup is rather pricey. If I can just buy their circuit board and find coils cheap elsewhere like I did on my little 16cc Kioritz project, that would be great!

Good luck...We've been looking for cheap coils for almost 20 years...The coils sold by C&H are the best and least expensive so far...Wholesale price for a coil from Zenoah, next best, is around $25.00, if you can buy wholesale from a dealer......Some of the cheaper coils won't stand up to the 300 or so volts put out by CD ignition circuits.....

When you consider all the various parts of a complete ignition system, as well as the overall design and packaging, the price is not at all unreasonable. CH's single cyl kit system is $89.95. Complete with a weedie timing kit (prop hub & hall effect sensor) is $119.95. Put that into perspective with the cost of other RC related items. A single digital servo can cost that much.

Still, it's always fun to tinker and DIY. Personally, I find it prudent to be frugal elsewhere on the airplane. By shopping around for bargains, closeouts and clearance items, I can easily save more than enough to spend on an ignition system vs. a DIY kit.

Thanks for the answer. Guess I'll have to stick with what we have! The CH site lists a coil with the "plug wire potted in" but then right below that it says the coils do not have plug wires. Doesn't make sense. Do you know what the deal is with that?

i've found a couple of coils on some older echo saws that are the same as the zenoah coils. these were on the orange colored echos and i haven't seen them on the echo site and don't know if they were ever on the american market.
i've never seen the CH coil but at $20 i can't imagine finding a better deal if you have to buy something new. i think they mean that you (the buyer) has to pot the lead into the coil.
if you really want to tinker, you can try playing around with trigger-transformers like those found in strobes, flashes and stunguns. all these devices follow the same principals as cd ignition so be carefull!

I am using with success coils from motorcycles like Honda XR 600 or Honda Transalp , brand names are "Nippondenso" or "Jtec". I am using in test firing a Jtec new coil at 4000 rpm aprox for more than 6 hour ( yes 6 , I have plenty of time ) in a test stand with a CDI scratch build with more than 500 volt in the primary of coil.
After I put a CDI in a test stand with a Homelite 38 cc chain saw engine modified to use in a Fokker I building and work more than 1 gallon of gas .very sweet start, with a handmade wood propeller.
You can use also old coil of motorcycles from repair shop, they survive motorcycles.I have a pair and work well
The lead of coil is screwed in the newer models , older is glued and you don't take out, I have both.
The coils have two pins on back they are inputs, the green collar is the positive pin , the black collar is the negative.
Chinese , japanese and taiwanese coils I have are the same color collars.
The coils are light to me , I do not even see a coil of Echo . Only stock chaisaws and old Ryobi.
They are rugged and whitstand abuse. I remove the lead from spark plug and let it spark free and no damage to insulation, after normalised and no problem.
Good leads come from discarded leads from real planes. I have a set of a Piper Tomahawk from my club. Make a contact with your local air field and meet with mechanic ,they have ever an old set in a junk box.

Good leads from real planes are leads from spark plugs.
The lead is long , aprox two foots, may be 1/4 inch diameter with a braided insulation , very flexible.GOOD QUALITY
You can unscrew the lead from the motorcycle coil and screw the lead from real plane.

what about the small model electronics coils that the JEH IGNITIONS website sells?

I forget to say , the ignitions coils from motorcycles have ferrite , no iron . Very light, also cheap I bought mine at 12.50 U$S but can be free from the junk box from your local motorcycle repair shop, I have a pair from the junk box and from junk motorcycle and work fine

Ok, thanks for all the input guys. RE the JEH coils, they are a bit more expensive than the CH coils, and I'm not sure they would work with CD type ignition as they are designed for regular Kettering ignition.
