Hey guys,
I was lucky enough to find a Yellow Aircraft Cap 10B project about an hour from my house in North Dallas, on Craigslist. I was just interested in the plane but it came with what appears to be a 26CC weed wacker engine on it that has been converted to Glow! It has a Perry carb and beautifully machined adaptors for the carb, prop shaft, and engine mount. My question is this: Why would someone do this? Is there an advantage that I am not aware of? This is not a typical WW conversion; the machining is 1st class and it looks like someone took some serious time doing this. If any of you can shed any insight on this rig, please email me at [email protected].
Thanks,
Jerry

The engine mount and glow plug adapter are commonly available purchased parts.
The adapter for the Perry carb is perhaps custom made
That is a Ryobi type engine. Most were 31cc but there were also 28cc versions. Could have actually had a Ryan or Lawn Boy label when a new weed whacker
It should run well but will use a lot of glow fuel. Use a fuel made for the the big Super Tigers with less oil
You can convert it back to spark and gasoline with an ignition from CH and a Walbro type carb

Thanks!
This is a good beginning. I guess that the next obvious question is: Should I convert it back to ignition? I would love to salvage the Perry carb and use it on any of my big Super Tigers. Why do you think someone would do this?

It's a hobby and some people do it because they want to?
The engine with the original magneto engine is not very handy to start by hand although they are easy enough when using a proper electric starter.
It will start by hand on glow about as well as it will with a battery ignition

It has more power on methanol. You can buy straight methanol for around $5 per gallon, then mix in about 4% oil, this engine doesn't need much oil. Converting back to gas will probably cost the same or more than what you can get a decent Chinese gas engine for.

There is another option.
These engines run pretty good on Gas Glow.
1 part 10/10 glow fuel and 2 parts gasoline.
With that Carb. tuning will be real narrow, but it would be real easy to setup.
There is a large section on Gas glow here on RCU.

You'll never get him/her off the sofa now! I had to buy a new sofa just so I could teach our greyhound not to jump on my lap
Topic? On yes.... Industrial type engines do run quite well on glow. Idle is good and power is up. They use lots of fuel though! Normal glow fuel with 20% castor makes a great mess and masses of smoke
This 62cc one I converted back to petrol - which is a lot cleaner.

Thanks Gentlemen,
I think that will try to convert it back to gas. I have a Walbro that should work. I also have one of these:

I have been looking for a reason to try one of these kits....will keep you posted.
Thanks again,
Jerry

in the gas engine for sale section there is an RC EXL ignition system for about $60, and if you already have a carb you are good to go, just grab a hose clamp to hold the sensor over the crankcase snout and drill a hole in the prop hub for a magnet (Radio shack has a 2 pack of 3/16" magnets for a couple bucks, or see if you can get one from the seller) and epoxy that in, The CDI system would be easier to setup on that engine than what you linked to.
