ECHO SB1080 runs great!
Thanks to all who helped with their great suggestions.
This is one is a 50cc Echo short block. The carb is a WT542. The ignition is CH. The prop is a 20x10. I made everything else. The muffler is the base of a little gas cylinder, a piece of flat stock and part of a lawn chair. The hub is bar stock aluminum. The prop shaft is part of an old waterwell draw bar.
Results? idle 1550 rpm...........high end? 8100 rpm. I am elated! It runs smooth too.
Time to re-engine the old Big Bee. This one is a lot better than the 65 cc that is in it now! This one calculates to 5.6 HP, and 28-pounds of thrust.
Perspective, 5.6 hp is double my old mini bike horse power, impressive.

BTW That giant muffler can will get trimmed down. Big volumes seem to keep it quieter and that is good since my neighbor gives me trouble from time to time and I don't want to give him any ammo. As an aside, I started making a simmilar muffler from the bottom of a disposable fire extenguisher. I did not think ahead and it got destroyed on the lathe. Even so the thickness of material and overall size is about right and the price is perfect. I'll have to check with a fire extenguisher outfit and see if they will make some donations.

It was not extracted from anything. It is a short block bought as such, Echo part number CS1080. There are a couple of places that have it as a replacement part. I made the hub myself, see the attached photos. the mount is made from angle stock then JB weld, glued and fastened with machine screws. The muffler is the bottom of a gas cylinder, a little fire extenguisher work too. The exhaust pipe is the shaft of a weed wacker. Ignition is RCEXL.

Hi,
Do you have the AUW for that setup?
Also, did you do any port work etc. to improve performance or is that a straight SB1080?
Thanks.
MSS.

Like he said. It is a straight up short block. I did not do any internal mods. I see no reason to do so. It runs very reliably and strong. I have never even cracked the case. Randy's small engine repair on EBAY can fix you up on the cheap for a new short block. I fabricated the prop hub, intake manifold, and muffler. I just enjoy that kind of work. I did not eliminate the rear oil seal. I might do so if I take it out of the airplane. You can buy the bits and pieces already done. It is a very simple assembly job if you buy the pieces.

Scota4570 -
So 14 months later I find this thread and hope you are still out there and maybe have an answer to a question about the Echo SB1080 short block conversion. I'm interested in doing one of these and have no problem with acquiring most any of the "parts" to do it (I actually already have the short block and a Walbro 542 carb). My problem will be with the prop hub as I don't have the tool resources to make one myself. You mentioned that "you can buy the bits and pieces already done" in your previous post. Does this mean that you know of a place to get such a prop hub? That would be the only thing holding me back from leaping into this conversion. I imagine I could find a muffler somewhere as well but if you also know who's would fit that info would be much appreciated as well. It's tinkering time here in Montana now so if you have any idea about sources for these items-especially the prop hub-that would be great.

RE: ECHO SB1080 runs great!
There was an outfit that had prop hubs, mufflers and mounts for echo, poulan and a bunch of others. My wife has trashed my computers. My old favorite lists are all gone. I searched for a while and can't find the company. It may be RC extreme power but, if so they don't carry that stuff any more. Maybe somebody else know who I am describing? Good luck.

I remember Brilleli being out there too - at one point I was seriously considering their 45. I'll give Indiana Tiny Engines a look-see. Thanks for the tip!
