hey guys I got a question, I just bought a brand new homey and started my conversion I was wondering how hard will it be to start by hand with the stock ignition. The engine was made for California so I am hoping that does not make matters worse.

I rather doubt you will be able to start it by hand especially if it has the Phelan ignition system.

The needle valves are fixed on the california version? The carb is too small anyway. Look for a Zenoa 23 or 26 carb or one with about a 7/16" venturi.

So I won't be able to start it by hand man that sucks. I do believe I got the carb situation solved though I had a real old kiortz carb that bolted on perfectly plus I opened the venturi to about 3/8s inch. So what do you suggest I should do about the ignition problem.

I've never used a starter on my Homey 25, it's one of the easiest to start motors I've ever owned. Stock ignition. This one was purchased new from Home Depot about 3 months ago and came with a Walbro carb that didn't have a high speed needle so I replaced that carb with a G-23 carb. Runs great on the Ultra Stik with a 16x8 Bambula.

It will hang on the prop for a few seconds before falling off when I'm trying to do the hovering stuff. When going vertical at speed, it will climb a pretty good way before slowing down. Mine is the original version and weighs 13lbs. I did move the firewall back about 1.5 inches and made a hatch for the tank compartment. A friend just built one of the new versions and it came in just over 11lbs with a Homey in it.

I have three Homelite 25cc blower conversions in planes and they are among the easiest to start by hand engines I have. One's in a 14# bipe and the other two are in a 30# twin. I'm using two more of those engines in another twin that I'm working on.

Thanks again for your insight I was just wondering how big the ventury on the g23 carb is so that I can compare it with mine. I am hoping that my project will be less that 11 lb so I can get the best performance from and yes hovering is in my plans(hopfully).

There are two (or more, depending on which era) carbs on them that I know of. The most common is the 7/16" (28) carb. The glow version had a 27/64" carb. I have each and I run both on gas and they run about the same.

The most common in recent times was the WA167A Walbro. It's the gas 7/16" version with the bulb on the regulator side.
