Ryobi 4 Stroke Engine Mount
 

I'm in the process of converting a Ryobi 26 cc four stroke engine. It's a first generation motor with the magnesium sump. What is the concensus on engine mounts?

I may check with Jag ltd. Even if they don't have the mount in stock the pictures are still helpful. I'm considering a similar mount with a plate sandwiched between the case and the sump. I've cut a lot of metal off of the case but it looks like I can go farther yet.

Mine is a dead ringer of the pic Piper posted, except that I used two ears attached to the rear cylinder bolts. The single top screw on my engine mount stripped out the alum/mag.case threads quickly, that's why I went with the two mounting ears;)

I bought a piece of .125 alloy plate today. I've stqrted drawing out a plate that will fit between the case and the sump. When I get that fitted I'll add a vertical backplate and a couple of braces to make a triangular mount. I'll post pics as things progress.

Here are some pictures of what I have accomplished so far. No test run yet but the mount seems solid. There is a plate between the case and the sump. The struts serve to triangulate the plate. It's pretty rough. there is a lot of room for lighhtening and cosmetics and I am a little concerned about the long term durability of the allthread for strut material but it should serve for proof of concept. I'll post a picture as soon as it is running.

Any luck with the test run mgnostic?
I'm real interested in any prop / rpm, weight, vibration and fuel consumption info anyone can give. I saw one in a trimmer a few years ago and always thought it would make a neat RC engine.

Sorry, I forgot to post this a while ago.

My Ryobi went throught a 12 oz. tank of gas in 40-45 minutes at varying 75-100% throttle settings. APC 18-8 at about 5400 rpm.

I'm guessing that weight is not a concern. I have a similar project in the works and I've been very interested in this thread. Exactly what type of aircraft are you going to put this on? I was thinking that the would be great on an unclipped 1/4 scale piper. Gas convienence, four cycle sound, and an obundance of wing to support the extra weight. What do you all think?

I have fabricated a mount for my Ryobi 4 stroke 26cc from pieces of 2"x4" aluminum rectangular stock, obtained from the scrap yard for $1.00 #. First step is to turn the rectanular stock to a U stock, by cutting off one side. ( Or if you can find the right size U stock, you skip that step! It is all done with a band saw, drill press, and files. Took one evening and weighs 8 oz. Unlike the Jag Mounts which are attached to the oil pan, and a small mount for the stock muffler, mine mounts to the crankcase behind the flywheel, where the original fan housing was. That is after all where the engine was designed to be mounted. I will post a picture of the orginal flyweel mount(which was trimmed down and used for a pattern) and the face of the rectangular stock mount that I made. Another piece of rectangular stock then is trimmed, and attaches to the firewall to meet up with the mount on the engine, and done.

.My Ryobi is on Dynaflight Fly Baby ( about 80" wingspan) and weighs around 12#. The engine is not broke in yet, but turns an 18x8 at 6000rpm, and flys great! Stock carb and homemade muffler. My engine is the series with the plastic oil pan.

Do you know where you can get a 2nd gen Ryobi 4-cycle? I saw a reconditioned string trimmer for sale for $100 on Harbor Freight's website, but I don't know which generation engine it has.

I don't know where you can pick them up, except for Harbor Freight, and Northren tools. But I think most,if not all they stock now are second generation, the first generation, is too old now to be returned under warrenty.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the latest generation 4 stroke is in the 1000 series machines, ie 1079. All the ones I have seen from Harbor Freight are the 800 series.

These are pictures of the mount that I made for my old Ryobi 4 stroke. It runs on a homebrew CD ign. I have a Bridi Corben Baby Ace kit that I plan to try it on.

Thanks for the comment. I still have some trimming of the mount and the engine to do, but it seems that it should work ok.

Matt I like the engine mount. It looks strong and very functional. For me the cosmetics are never important when prototyping.

I would not worry about the allthread. I mounted an engine on four 1/4” carriage bolts used as standoffs so that the thrust could be adjusted and it has been in use for over ten years.

That Ryobi 4 stroke sure looks neat! What sort of weight do they end up at? What are the approximate dimensions of the converted engine. I have a Ryobi 31 on a Telemaster, but would prefer the sound of a 4 stroke. Keep up the great work!
