Shindaiwa four stroke

Just converted a Shindaiwa four stroke trimmer engine with my CD ignition.....It weighs 3 1/2 lbs, has a nice flat back to put a plate on, idles at 1400..I'm running a Mejzlik 18-6 but can't tach it in the shop with fluorescent lights, the 1400 reading was with the lights out and using a flashlight through the prop...It is a very easy conversion, there is no oil tank..Fuel mix is 50-1 just like a 2 stroke...I'll put a Walbro WA125 on it tomorrow so there will be some way to adjust the high end...Looks like a WINNER...Same technology as a YS...

COOL!! been waiting a long time to see one of these converted, always seemed to me like it would a make much better airplane engine than the others that have oil sumps and such.

bet it would sound awesome with just a short header pipe for the exhaust...

Or a nice little reverse cone megaphone.:D
The Stihl four max looks like the same design, maybe someone will try on of those...We have s Stihl dealer here in Flagstaff, maybe I can con him out of a powerhead without having to buy the rest of the parts....These high end weedeaters are pricey.....

What is the displacement? I am keenly interested...love 4 stroke gasoline. I have a Honda GX31 on a Fleet biplane for 3 years. It is just barely enough. Flies real scale and sounds good. I run a 18-8 Zinger turns 6800. Turns a 18-6 7500 but seems to have better performance with the 18-8. Sounds GOOD!

Please keep us posted with the results of your testing with this engine. I'd love to get a 4 stroke with no sump. What's the displacement, size compared to a G-26 ? Any chance of getting pics ?

24.5cc, 8000 rpm, 1.15HP

One advantage of this 4stroke is that it can take a common WA or WT Walbro carb. Some of the other 4strokes (e.g. Ryobi) uses a different carb mount such that you couldn't easily slap on a larger venturi carb, or just one with adjustable H and L needles.

RE: Shindaiwa four stroke

True, but when you bolt a WA or WT on the stock insulator the pulse hole doesn't line up and the carb shaft is at a funny angle..There's no room in the stock insulator block to re reroute the pulse hole.I cut the stock block down a little and made another adaptor so that the carb shaft is parallel to the cylinder..the throttle will connect to the carb shaft and will be straight back and forth, no bell cranks....

RE: Shindaiwa four stroke

Good idea, Ralph. What did you use for the insulator material? G-10 boards?

Antique 11-25-2003 05:28 PM

RE: Shindaiwa four stroke

3/8 G10...A new fitting in the back of the carb and another in the G10 takes care of the pulse..The hole in the stock block is really small, maybe opening it up will let the engine breathe better..A 20-5 PK wide blade prop turns about 5500 and idles at 1200..Way too much prop, but sure sounds nice....

what is g-10 board????

Antique 12-04-2003 05:20 PM

RE: Shindaiwa four stroke

Epoxy board material, sold by industrial supply houses, comes in all shapes and thicknesses...3/8 thick costs about $22 a square foot...Can be drilled, milled, tapped, and other wise machined....

RE: Shindaiwa four stroke

Hey Cap...No snow yet, maybe tonight, we sure could use the moisture...:D
The Shindaiwa runs great, but a larger carb, WA167, doesn't seem to work right...The original carb is a 9mm WYL with a fixed high speed jet, and the WA167 acts weird on the engine..The reed under the carb is pretty small, but the way its made I was not about to enlarge ithe intake hole without a spare manifold in case something happened (it's not my engine)..The WYK carbs are larger, 10.5mm, and have and adjustable high speed needle...I think I'll try to get a spare manifold and reed and make the hole bigger, with a WYK carb...I can run a 20-5 prop but have to almost close off the intake to get the mixture right..Could be that the intake valve and port are too small to make any more power..The head is not removeable, like a Saito, so any port work would be pretty hard...
Right not the Mejzlik 18-6 looks like the best prop with the fixed jet carb, with the 20-5 next...
The reed is metal and pretty stiff, but maybe with this type engine, since the mixture goes through an intake valve, it isn't a factor like a normal 2 stroke...
Maybe a little dinky Walbro would work, something around the 7mm size, the engine doesn't seem to need much air....

RCIGN-1 That sure sounds like a fun experiment. I have been helping my cousin on a monster truck. Lot to learn on those critters!!! One of these days I got to get back to my project engines. Ha!! Take Care Capt,n

Hello Cap,n..The Ryobi was a Shindaiwa:eek:...Best rpm was about 7000 with a Mejzlik 18-6..I sent it back to the owner with a carb adapter so he could try some different carbs on it..He has a small engine shop in Hawaii so he has lots of carbs to try...soon as he gets back to me with some results I'll post them here...:D

Sorry about that mis-type....I probably should not be using this computer when I got the flue or whatever!!! I will get back when I feel better. Capt,n
