advice for first time conversion
 

I am trying my first conversion and have 4 echo srm 3800's and am wondering what the displacement is on these engines. I would also like to know the basics about converting these for flight. I am not looking to save a lot of weight or hop them up, but more or less, make them spin a prop. Thanks for any suggestions.

I just found that engine model on the echo website and it is a 38cc (hence the 3800:eek:). Does anyone know where to get the prop hub and what is the easiest way to do the ignition. I would like to keep it as simple as possible and use the supplied magneto system but don't know if that can be used and how to set it up while cutting off a lot of excess bulk (plenty there to work on).

Howdy neighbor! I'm in Northglenn.

I've never done an Echo, but you can usually get someone to make a prop hub for you, and shave the fins off the flywheel to lighten it up.

You'll need to make a mount for it. If the back of the case is flat- you can maybe make a flat mount from some 1/4" aluminum. Or maybe- if the back isn't flat- you can just use a beam mount like a typical glow engine.

post some pics of those puppies! They are possibly very similar to the 21,23,25 cc and many of those have been converted. depending on the parts you have, there may be a couple of prop hub options. I have a 40cc out of a blower and several 21 and 23cc. Canon program freezes puter or would post pics

AFAIK, nobody makes conversion kits for Echos. But if you are reusing the magneto, all you have to find is a prop hub that fits the output shaft thread - probably 8M1.0 or 8M1.25. You can get one of those from several different places, including CH Ignition and I'm sure RCIGN.

Echos make great RC engines. Too bad they are typically pricey so not too many folks care to convert them.

i'll try to post some pics soon . Also, thanks rcpilet, for the invitation. I was at work when you called but will return your call soon. I have the joy of working graveyard shift and sleeping little during the day. The pricey part on these were not too bad. I was at a garage sale and picked up four rsm 3800's and one "pro mac" from McCulloch (never heard of it) for $27. I have not pulled the engines out of all but one of them yet, but that one seemed to be in good shape. I have also heard that if you know a garbage man, that is a good place to get stuff. You would be amazed at what people throw away.
