Stihl 044
I was thinking of trying a Stihl 044 75cc converted engine on a 35% Lanier Giles 202 and was wondering about how much this engine weighs with the mag. ignition on it. I saw one and it looks heavy. Also wondering about the performance. On to a different engine---My brother in law gave me an engine off an old lawnmower and the measurements of bore and stroke come out to 157cc. The only number I found on the case was 6335. Has Tecumseh on the flywheel. Has a reed valve. I have cut it up enough to weigh a little over 8 lbs. without ignition on it and a Tillotson 304 carb from my carting days. Does anyone have info on the Stihl and has anyone tried to convert the big single Tecumseh. Thanks guys.

RE: Stihl 044
I have experience with the Stihl 044 as a chain saw.
They are great and can be hopped up very easily. I would loose the flywheel and go C&H ignition or use Gas & Alcohol and a glow plug to keep the weight down. They respond well to a hollowed out muffler and a velocity stack |
RE: Stihl 044
Thanks for the info. What do think it would weigh without ignition?

RE: Stihl 044
Just a educated guess would be 8 ounces less than with the flywheel.
Or around 4 1/2 pounds with. If you decide to convert it I would be interested in knowing th stripped down weight and the ready to fly weight. |
RE: Stihl 044
I have a 069 Stihl saw engine that has been flown in a 35# airplane with magneto ignition. My understanding is that it is a 69cc engine. Less muffler and coil it is over five pounds (over postal scale limit). Should I weight it at work tomorrow?

RE: Stihl 044
Thanks Bill, Ok if you can let me know what it weighs. Have you flown this engine? What did you think of its performance.

RE: Stihl 044
I thought the performance was superb considering the weight of the airplane. We cut too much material from of the coil mounting bracket and eventually destroyed two coils (high speed resonance of the coil and mounting bracket). Will weigh it and take a picture.
Dug up my old flight notes from 1992 and excerpts are from flight #115 to 145: 22/10 7900 RPM Tremendous vertical. Would not slow down on landing. Straight up to the top and kill switch triggered. 22/12 and slimline – 7100 RPM Air door raises RPM from 8600 to 8800 RPM on 17 7/8” APC indicating halo is getting away. Need velocity stack or air cleaner. Fuel consumption is very high. 20oz of fuel will last only about 13 minutes at medium high throttle. Broken coil changed engine to BR 400 Stihl. Bill |
RE: Stihl 044
I've never heard of the 069, are you sure it's not an 066.
The 066 is the most highly chainsaw in the 90 to 100cc range. It is also 3.1 pounds heavier that the 044 saw. The 044 is rated at 5.3hp and the 066 at 7.0hp. |

Don’t know. Cast in number on the cylinder is 1119. The local Stihl dealer who was then an avid flyer handed it to me one day and said fly it. I made the carb bracket and mounting plate.
Here are a few pictures. Bill |
RE: Stihl 044
Ralph and Bryce,
The engine is 5.8# with coil, without spark plug and without prop. If the size is known please let me know. Bill |
RE: Stihl 044
If any one has installed electronic ignition and has a good original coil I would like to buy it. With a coil I could put the engine back in service. The number on the coil is 2204 222 103 Bosch.
Thanks. Bill |

Thanks for the info, Bryce
