Toro 25 prop hub

1 Attachment(s)
I am converting 4 Toro 25cc engines. I do not have a lathe, so I need to buy the prop hubs from someone.
On eBay i found this prop hub, but I am a little vorried if it has good enough contact with the flywheel.
The only part toching the flywheel is the back of the hub, but the diameter is rather small.
Has anyone tried this, and how do you make your hubs?

RE: Toro 25 prop hub

Looks to me like the thread on the crankshaft end is 8mmx1 and the prop bolt is 5/16-24. This set-up would be for electronic ignition as the flywheel is not used and the hub would screw on to the crankshaft. Of course the 8mm thread could be at the end of the shaft too. I make all my hubs to look like that but I do CH ignitions on all them. I just stripped a Toro 25 to start to convert so I have not measured the threads yet.

Hi,
Topcat makes very nice hubs. They are knuled on both ends for tight fit. The well at the bottom of the flywheel allows omly a 7/8" diameter shank on the hub. Use blue or red locktite to secure hub. I use his hubs.

Hi jmj,

I make my own like that, but I mill 2 flats so I can use a 17mm spaner to tighten them onto the crank, and use loctite too. I guess you could also just tighten a prop onto the front and use the prop to tighten the hub onto the crank.

Cheers,
Rich

I have taken a flywheel off a homelite & mounted it on my drill press. Then I took a holesaw (1 1/4 in. Dia) & cut the center out for my magnet for electric ignition. That way you can use a hub purchased elseware. I use carr engineering or wackerengines for my parts. I have lightened a home 1 1/4 lbs.

I used to buy a few from topcat myself.top notch.very good price.youll need to screw that onto the flywheel or like stated cut the flywheel center out.little locktite and a pipe wrench after a rag put around hub and its done.heres a pic of one of my 6 bolt hubs i make for WWI and golden age from my lathe i just purchased this year.

I fly mostly WW1 birds. That hub with the bolts looks good. I have gone to a scrap yard & picked up 1 in. alum. shaft about 1 foot long & cut my own. They have a tool to find the center of the shaft to drill & tap the hole.

Thats where i pick up my stock from.I just bought 2 peices, each 1 foot long.1 peice is 1.5 inches dia,the other one 1.75 dia.$10.00 for both peices.I have to go back and get some more because i cut them up for size already and im going to make one that fits all the way over the crank for an EI.I still have a couple of topcats.I to have 4 toros to convert yet.did one and sold it already.Im still getting used to my lathe yet but after i do a hub like the g23 well see.i just bought a boring bar also.I have a 80 inch sopwith triplane scratch built from jerry bates plans im restoring and have a 6 bolt hub on it.

I just got back from the field & one of the members bought a elect ing. from Tod Syssa. The same one that I bought. He mentioned that he got a hub & spacer from Topcat. He went thru ebay. I am more into making my own. I have 16 engines converted from 16cc to 33cc. The best one I have is a Kiritz 2 ring. It weighed 3 lbs before I took off the flywheel & coil. I havn't put the ign. on yet but am curios as to the weight. The 25cc Homie is on a BalsaUSA built kit. It has a 72 in wing. Will try to upload a pic.

Hi,

Is that the Balsa USA Taube 90? If so, I have the same kit. How does it do with the Homelite 25cc, and did you do any mods to mount the engine?? How was the kit to build??

Do you have any pics with the engine mounted, etc.??

Thanks,
AV8TOR

RE: Toro 25 prop hub

Yes this is the Taube 90. The kit was easy to build. The engine mounted with a 25cc Homie very easy. The only mod I did was to make sure that the control rods for the elev. are supported outside the fuse. Thats because the rod is so long after it comes out of the fuse that it will bend & you will have no elev. control. I used nirod tube & then inserted piano wire inside. I have some other pics if you need.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. Sure, I'd love to see more pics!

I bought the kit about a year ago and haven't gotten around to it. It's funny; at one point I asked the owner of Balsa USA what he thought about putting a gasser on it, and he said he didn't think it would be a good idea. Then a short time later he got back with me, and said he had changed his mind. He said he had gone to a fly in or something, and saw one with a 25cc gasser on it, and that it was flown frequently and did very well. Maybe it was yours he saw!

Yes - we would all like to see some more pics. I have on of the BUSA Taube 90 kits in my stock to be built when I retire from work one day!

AV8TOR: I think one of your gas/grow engines would be perfect for that plain!

The only pics I have are different stages of building. I don't know where the pict. with the engine are. I will keep looking.
