Yoram, the store in Santiago did not close, thy moved to a bigger place one block from the old location, the phone number is the same.OK in living in Sosua
nice place to spend a lifespan.
On the epoxy question we have the same problem,5 gal pails only (finishing resin, not 5 minute)
If you need the Hobbyplaza number let me know

Bigboat
I found a ferrite transformer that I think is the same size like the one you used. It fits into the holes on the board just like a glove (not OJ glove, though :D). Do I make 400 windings or do I use a wire 16.2m as mentioned on this thread before?

Also, is the size of the wire important? I have some 0.13mm wire. Can I use it for the 400 winding coil?

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

(AWG36) =0.13mm is the half size AWG30 (=0.25mm)
http://media.edt.hist.no/el2/Prosjekt/awg__mm.htm
I think you don't get the power to load the capacitor.

OK, I'll try to get the bigger one. What about the winding? Do I go 400 or do I go by the length of the wire?

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

Try to keep the 400 windings, only if your transformer can't handle the volume you can reduce it.

Bigboat: I have a small metal lathe now. Is there any way to make a device to chuck in a lathe to wind coils? I can slow the speed down quite low. Thanks Capt,n

I've used CA or hot melt glues to mount to a mandrel that is then held in the chuck. John

You need a counter on the lathe to count the windings.
The counter can be electronic, but also a mechanic counter will work.

Thanks Guys.....maybe some time I will try to make a least one coil to see if it works. Its fun to do experiment!!!! Capt,n

Maybe you can start to make a nice hotair-engine with your lathe......

I run into this site while looking for parts for the CDI. The transformer is only 50cent plus shipping. http://catalog.thedigitalshop.net/xfmr/txfmr.html

Bigboat, what kind of a tape did you use on the ferrite transformer to insulate between layers and at the end? I tried to find it on the net but couldn't get anything that looks like transformer tape.

Bigboat, first of all, let me take my hat off for you. ;) It's this kind of things what RC is all about (at least for me): learn, share, and have fun. Not only you save a precious weight, you also improve engine performance. It's wonderful!
I'll see if I can get a gas engine once for all. If the engine it's worth the try, I'll try the CDI conversion, I'm really looking to it.:D

Just a silly question, is this CDI project the same as this (http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_34..._7/key_/tm.htm)? (Excuse me, I haven't read the whole thread yet).
Have fun!

All awnsers in one posting.

@PilotTiger - You don't need any tape between the layers of your HV-transformer.....if you mean the transformer ON the pcb.
If taking about the HV-transformer for the spark (we call this the bobine), you need between every layer tape.
The best way to finish this transformer (bobine), put the complete coil into polyester to isolate the winds.

@JCaste - NOP, this one and the other (from JMJ) are a little differend.
This cdi have more options and the software can handle the hardware in a better way.
Not everyone can programm a PIC, but with the exel-sheet everyone can make the right table for his engine.
And not forget.......the hardware will be cheaper in this cdi.....16F84 is hard to get and very expencieve.

BTW, this cdi is a *product* from JMJ and me.
I'm the *hardware man*, JMJ the *software man*
Charlie Moore was the one who was using a differend PIC and table, we have optimize this table for every engine and some other options.

Sorry for my poor understanding Bigboat (the late hour also adds to that), let me see if I got it right:
The CDI which you and JMJ developed (the CDI featured in this thread) is the CDI which has more options, cheaper hardware, better, less buggy software, excel-programmable, etc. You made the hardware, JMJ did the software. Did I got that right?

A friend of mine is electronic, so if I start the project I'll try not to bother you with questions about components! ;)
See you!

You mean like even between the layers of the same wire? The first wire has 100 windings and is about two layers. Between them too? If yes then I really need that tape. Anybody know what kind of tape it is?

Just for the record.
There are two HV coils, one is on the PCB - this one produced about 400 a 600 Volt and don't need any tape.
The other one (bobine) between the PCB and the spark produced about 20.000 Volt and NEED tape between all layers AND the low Voltage (400 - 600 Volt) site who is coming from the PCB.
This is the homemade bobine http://home.online.no/~jon-mj/homemade_coil.htm
And this is a homemade HV-coil http://home.online.no/~jon-mj/images/cdi_ig4.jpg

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

Bigboat, I understood you very well. I know you were talking about the 'bobine'. In my last post so was I. It is mostly referred to as the 'coil' as in 'ignition coil'. Also, I think that what you call 'bobine' is called in English bobbin but I could be wrong about it.

I have to order every thing from the States. I don't know what kind of tape it is and it wasn't clear on www.mouser.com either. When I wrote them they didn't answer. I know you can't use normal electrical tape. It is too think and the adhesive is not good either. I'm stuck without a tape and would like to know what kind it is so that I can find it on the net and order it.

My ferrite transformers should be here by next week and the week after, I hope, the PIC16.... will arrive too.

Great to see you guys still work on this project. I've built my own, but i can not get the transformer part anywhere(can not wind it my self).

CH now has a CDI spark coil with a shield plug lead and rubber plug cap for $19.95. Its not on the web site so just call or fax.

I am am working on a 50ccm moped which has a basic CDI ignition system. I was thinking about updating it to include a timing map and your project seems interesting.

Do you think this CDI system can be adapted to a moped? Is it possible to use the existing high voltage system in the moped and just make the timing board? If I have understood it right I should adjust the basic timing to max advance and the timing board will delay the ignition relative to engine rpm.

Can someone help a stupid, please. I downloaded the MikroC for Pic program and copied the two lines from the excel sheet to it. I tired to compile it and I get an error message. What do I have to do to download the lines to the chip? Do I have to compile it and if yes, what do I do about the errors? Why is the program defaulting to this blinking led thing and ignoring my settings? I did downloaded the right program (mikroC), correct?

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

@PilotTiger, You have to sellect the right chip and his settings.

@villekille, Yes you can use the CDI-timerboard also for a moped.
