Super Tartan Twin
I was given, a Super Tartan Twin with less than 40 oz of fuel run thru it so the engine is virtually new. Old engine but never run.
My question to some of the "Conversion Guru's" I would like to install a CDI ignition system on this engine. I know that CH used to do conversions on them but again this is an old engine and not on the list of "Popularity" for Giant Aircraft. The engine is 44cc so its plenty of CC to haul most of the 80" to 85" Aircraft around. If anybody has one that is converted, I would love to see pictures of the conversion. Can the carb be drilled and tapped to put a smaller "Seat" for the needle? (Gas takes less than Alcohol) I would like confirmation that the Cylinders are the same and can be rotated 180° to put the Exhaust and Carb on the bottom of the engine. Why is the big Preheat Duct behind one of the cylinders run into the Carb? I would like to make a viable Gas engine from this twin if possible. Last question, do the cylinders need to be Shimmed to lower the Compression when going to Gasoline. Tnx.. RCBuilder42yrs |
RE: Super Tartan Twin
Try the Gas/glow mix. It may run good that way. Sould be easy to try. Capt,n

RE: Super Tartan Twin
CapitanJohn,
Please tell me what you mean by Gas/Glow.... NEW term for me. Are we now selling GAS/Alcohol mix ie: Corn Squeezing and Crude Oil? Ralph, Thanks for the URL on Mr. Cline, I see that he is now working with or has knowledge of Tartan's! RCBuilder42yrs |
RE: Super Tartan Twin
RCbuilder: Go to engine conversions and read av8tors postings. You can also type in the search at the top of page and do a search for gas/glow. You can install 4 cycle superplugs (glow) and use a mix of gas and glow fuel. About 8 oz of Glow fuel to 18 oz of high test gas. The Idle on some of these engines running on this mis is super slow and the starting is just a backflip. stupid easy. A twin may be better:D or worse[&o] I bet it will be good. Capt,n P.S. You can also do a search and type in av8tor! Well, grab a beer or a soda and start reading; it's all here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_12...page_31/tm.htm
Good luck and have fun, Here is another post http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_12...25/key_/tm.htm AV8TOR |

RE: Super Tartan Twin
What type of carb is on your twin?I don't have the twin but have several of the singles. The regular Tartan single has a Super Tiger carb on it while the Super Tartan single has a Walbro.I had always assumed the the twins were the same way but you know the thing about assumptions.

RE: Super Tartan Twin
I have modified my TT to work with CDI. I bought the chinese twin CDI from CH ignitions ( about $110.00) drilled and tapped heads for CM6 plugs. Really worked well. Have only run on test stand so far, idle is sweet and low. Didn't change original carb, just readjusted needles. Good luck, red

RE: Super Tartan Twin
This is only a 1.25ci engine. Is that alot of waite for being a twin and a 1.25ci?
Paul |
RE: Super Tartan Twin
Yes, the TT is moderately heavy, but very powerful. I believe it is a 2.7ci (45cc) engine. I had mine originally on glow in a Midwest Extra 300. Flew great on a MAS 20x8, but when I changed to APC 20x8 WOW, a different airplane. I know the APC looks funny, but it really brings this engine alive. The only problem I had with the TT was it had to have on board glow, that is why I switched to gas and CDI. Good luck, red

RE: Super Tartan Twin

I have been trying to find me one for my exstra 300 but no luck so for. |
