Zama or Walbro, which is better?

1 Attachment(s)
The Homelite 25 cc that I'm about to convert, came with a Zama carb H46 14A model, I've never used Zama's before, should I stick with this one or should I replace it with a Walbro, this one has a 1/2 inch venturi size, what about the priming bulb is it an advantage to have it on our models or should it be discarded?

Walter,
The Zama will work ok. The primer connection can be blocked off if you like. The engine would perform better with an 11mm carb, either Walbro or Zama.

You need a bigger carb (11.11mm) either Zama or Walbro

Walbro is better, because it is designed and made in America.:D

Far as I know, the Walbro factory is in Mexico...

In actuality, one runs about as good as the other.

But we tend to like Walbro's because we are more familiar with and cross reference them better

OK, got my answer, thanks; guess I'll have to look for another carburator, this one is only 9 mm, maybe I can open it up a bit, I am used to Walbro's also, never had a Zama before, thanks guys!

Walbros have not been made in America for a long time....
Neither are Tillotsons...
Or Bings..
Or Del Ortos.
Or any other gasser carbs...

Ralph, isn't there a big Walbro plant in Nogales, Mexico?

Haven't been to Nogales for about 40 years, could be a plant there...The boxes the carbs come in say the parts may be made in Japan or Mexico, I guess my post about being made in Singapore was wrong

RE: Zama or Walbro, which is better?

Hey, sorry from bringing this thread back from the dead.

I'm the guy who last year posted up pictures of a scooter I'd built myself, and mounted a 25cc Homelite motor on.

Well, I'd say this season I've only put about 60-100 miles on it (been very busy with work and school; it's not used for transportation -- just fun)

Well, I got myself two spare HomeLite motors, however, none of them came with working carburetors. (one of them had a shattered primer bulb, the other Zama one is clogged internally, and I'm not good with carburetors).

I'm currently running the stock Walbro carb which came with the 25CC Homelites on my scooter, and am satisfied with it.

I was wondering, what is the model code of this carburetor (I know it's on the inside of the intake, but, I'd rather not pull the intake and have to buy new gaskets and all).

Secondly, the motor is pretty well stock, and, I run it quite hard, and wouldn't mind some additional power. If there were another carburetor I could buy (e.g I'd heard of 11 mm carbs being used, and a WT-476 or something) which would give me a boost in power, I'd be happy with that too. If you guys have the proper model numbers I should be looking for, or, even better, have one of the carbs for sale, that'd be great.

The stock Walbro for the Homelite 25 is a "20"

Its about 8mm

Check out Dave Discount Motors. They stock among a bunch of other things Walbro 167-A carbs 11.11 venturi I have a number of them. They sell the primer bulb replacements as well. I pay the somewhat marked up prices on some of their items and they provide good service and delivery. A win-win situation for someone in a remote area.

I use the same carb on engines from 22cc thru 31 cc, including Homelite 25.

Getting ZAMA parts is a big PITA. Vendors of Zama parts are like hens teeth! Do search here for Zama.

Have an order in-transit as I type.. got to go and check tracking number bye.
