RE: Lathe for conversions
I really wanted to go but still recovering from a recent heart attack and told to be careful for awhile longer yet. Weather has not been compatable for flying here for awhile. Range testing my thor powered eagle today to be prepared for the next quiet day. Don't mind flying in the wind but like calm days for maiden flights and trimming. take care of the foot maybe see you at another meet this season.

RE: Lathe for conversions
Here's an old shop hint for emergency use. Take the diameter of the bolt/screw. For the drill size, substract the fractional value of the thread pitch.
For example, for a 1/4X28 you get a calculated drill size of 0.214 (i.e., 0.25 - 1/28 inch). The chart drill size is 0.213. For a 1/4X20, the calculation is 0.25 - 1/20 = 0.200, which is pretty close to the chart size of 0.201, and so forth. Modern hand-held calculators have made the calculation a lot easier. John |
RE: Lathe for conversions
THANKS GUYS: The links you gave was excellent! Just what I needed to find. I am sure it will help a lot of others also. Best Regards Capt,n:D:D

RE: Lathe for conversions
I just happened upon a 7x10 lathe of my very own... almost new for $195, not too bad. now I get to make my own prop hubs and such, need to start paying more attention to this thread... now my project lathe (old craftsman 9 lathe that needs a lot of attention and parts) can be a project and I can just make stuff!

RE: Lathe for conversions
welcome to the curl makin group ranger. I tend to make more curls than parts. LOL

RE: Lathe for conversions
Hey guys...I sure put my Lathe and Mill to use the last 2 weeks. I had to make some parts for a Model Hit & Miss engine. I now have it running. What a HOOT!!!! She runs great complete with a magnetic pick-up ignition I bought from RCIGN1. Man what a spark!! The spark will jump more than 3/8 inch. The only problem was the spark would jump clear over to the intake valve spring!!! Best regards, Capt,n:D:D

Hi Captn John, It is good to see you posting again. I hope that you have recovered from your vacation. That is quite an engine, Bet you can count the RPM. WOndered what kind of aircraft you are going to mount it on?

RE: Lathe for conversions
Looks real good Capt,n. Was it a kit and how much did you have to machine?

RE: Lathe for conversions
oldtimer.....I am going to use it to start my airplanes!!!! Not really!!! It is something I had for about 7 years and finally got the rest of the castings to finish. It was actualluy in the process of build in December of 1981. I bought it and all the big casting parts was done. Still there was a lot of small parts to fit and be finished. Lots ot carefull drilling & tapping of parts. It was fun most the time with some real touchy work too. At least for me!!! Best Regards Capt,n;) P.S. Most you guys would love the sound with the neat effects of seeing the crank, con rod, piston and rocker arm going in sync to the sound.

RE: Lathe for conversions
tim220225: The photo is not the finished product. The bolt in the govenor catch was replaced with a .125 dia pin. The igition was not totally done ...ect. I will post a pohto of it with all parts in place sometime soon. The reply to "oldtimer" will give you more of what I did. Best Regards Capt,n;) UPDATE.... I got a kidney stone attack...but I will post pohtos of it finished:eek:

RE: Lathe for conversions
tim220225: It will be a while before I do anything to much. A attack of kidney stones that put my heart out of Rythem kinda slowed me down. They was able to stop my heart and jump start it back in rythem ...than the Lord for that! Best regards, Capt,n

RE: Lathe for conversions
Well...I plan to do more with the hobby and less of the million other things that get in the way! I am getting rid of some high maitinence things that don,t get used enough to justify all the work in keeping them in any kind of good shape. Ya...less yard features, ect also. Capt,n
