Anybody wondering about a Shindaiwa 80 4 stroke ? You saw it here first..;)
Have one here, staying up till the wee small hours converting it...
Looks good, will weight about 8 1/2 lbs, no way to make it any lighter...
Might even get someone to call it a "masterpiece" like the Stihl 64.9 in the gasser thread ;)
Funny, no one ever called one of my 4 Stihl 64.9s a masterpiece...

It's close, needs the 2 piece hub drilled and the sensor mounted...will run tonight....:D
Ran it at 12:05 AM...Easiest starting gasser ever...24-10 PK prop, didn't tach it...stock muffler is so quiet you can hear the prop...Used two different carbs, the stock small one and a WYK33 with an adjustable high speed needle...Both work fine, the 33 seems to have more rpm, will tach it tomorrow in the daylight...
The C&H syncro spark needs to be flipped once to set the retard..It starts so easy that once on the first flip, with the ignition set at 28 BTDC, it kicked back..Subsequent starts will be with a serious first flip, just in case...
Minimal vibration, no worse than any other big gasser, better than some...
Didn't weigh it, still on the test stand....
Gonna be a great engine, maybe even a "masterpiece" like Brillelli's Stihl 64.9...;)

Boy I can hardly wait to get this engine coupled up with that big 4-blade prop. I'm just about finished with the reduction unit/variable pitch mechanism so your timing is perfect!

Great news Ralph! You are a luck man Tom! Lets see some photos of that reduction drive! RPMs when you get to it please Ralph, and by the way YOU ARE a Masterpiece Ralph!!!! :D

Can't call it a masterpiece without a bunch of photos to admire. Video with sound would be almost too much! You must be use to hearing the comment, You are a work of art! :)

Later today, I'm trying different setting on the timing....And maybe a different carb..The stock carb is one of those rotary barrel things with a very stiff return spring and no high speed needle adjustment...Hard to do everything, there are people waiting patiently for their conversions and repairs...The shindaiwa get worked on late at night, my wife gives me a midnight curfew ;)

Ralph, is this Shindaiwa 80 conversion one that you plan on offerring as a commercial service or a personal project? This might be a good match for a 1/3 scale Pup I'm building.

OK, here's a couple of photos of the beast.


Excellent work by Ralph, I can hardly wait to get this on the test stand and coupled up to the variable pitch prop system. I know it's off topic, but attached are a couple of snaps of that as well. Gotta run, will update with performance data when I get it!

Very easy conversion, the mounting plate bolts on where the pull starter was, the crank taper is the same as a G62, the G62 carb works fine...The casting was left on the front in case a mount was needed for the variable pitch prop mechanism...Ignition is C&H syncro spark, the sensor is in a ring pressed on the front of the case...

What ever happened with this conversion? Has it ever been installed and flown in a model? What size propeller can it swing? at what rpm? Seems that the whole thread died quietly, can someone shed some light on this conversion please?
