BME 50 3.3 lbs.
DA 50 3.0 lbs. my stihl conversion 2.8 lbs and it is 56cc I will have #'s by tuesday. I wanted to build a engine as light as the bme ,then when I knew I could get there I wanted to beat the da by 10% and came really close ,I could save a little more but I am really satisfied with my engine as is. I hope I have even more braging rights come tuesday. I know someone will chime in about the BME 55x but I belive I have one of the lightest engines around available today. I built this engine to prove a point that conversions are not always heavy. :boxing: Darin |

I have a total of
old saw 10.00 aluminum 6.00 hardware 1.80 new gaskets 5.20 carb rebuild kit 10.00 --------------------------- total 23.00 yes this means I only have $33.00 into this motor so after ignition I will have about $175.00 total Darin |

Here is my stihl 91cc mount it is just longer case bolts through standoffs,I will do the 56cc the same way,ps the mount on the 91 is 5 oz so the 56 should be under 4oz. for even 2 oz. less than the h9 mounts needed for the bme 50 so the bme ready to mount is 3.4 lbs.mine is almost half poud lighter ,way cool is it not :D

Looks nice even to a newbie like me, makes me wonder if a Promac 60cc is a good candidate, bought it cheap years ago, now I'm back into R/C, building a 1/4 scale Ryan STA but looking at the 30% ARFs.

Did you do the machining of the prop adaptor yourself? Looks great! With the ignition system and mount installed, it will probably weigh just a bit more than the DA or BME 50, but for the price you paid and the power of the Stihl engine, it can't be beat! Lynn |

BTW, what ingition are you using? And do you have an exact weight for the complete ign. system with batteries? I think the question of the day is, what is your source for old Stihl saws at $10? I'll take two! |

Agreed... cheesh I wish I could find an old Stihl for 10 bucks! what a bargain, and great job! any of the conversion parts like that available comercially for those of us who cant machine our own?

I just went and bought a stihl 031,. has the same motor as this one and a way cool $10.00 from the same shop, they just junked it the day before I got there to pick up my gaskets, I also picked up a solo 47cc 3hp blower both of them are like shiny new piston and cylinders, I have engines coming out my ears LOL guess I just need more planes.all of these engines came from a local saw shop that told me they will not replace a scored piston and jug with a used one so they keep the saws around for the other parts. I give them 10.00 for them and bring back all the leftover parts,heck it saves them money and time to not have to remove the parts although I have cleaned them out I am picking up a 044 that is I think 70cc but it needs main bearings so another whole 30.00 to put that one together.my stihl 91cc that has a pic of the mount, only weighs 4 lbs.

I will try a 22x10 and see where we are at and I made the prop adapter myself and all of the stihl I have are a different taper so I have to custom make each one.

I have a new ch ignition but I need to get another magnet and pickup for this engine because I already instaled them in another engine so as soon as I get the items needed I will post some #'s

Since your into saving money on your projects.. Contact Ralph Cunningham "RCIGN" on RCU for ignition systems. He can save you a few bucks or at least point you in the right direction.

Another poster commented that the engine in my McCulloch Promac 610 chainsaw is a 60cc, is that definate? Shall I rip it apart for a conversion? I need an engine for 1/4 scale warbirds.

the thing about war birds is a 1/4 scale is about a 120' wingspan I belive so a 60 will be marginal at best,alot of people for some reason refere to any plane in the 70-80' 1/4 scale,not so when refering to the war ships like the mustang.

My bad, the aircraft in question is a Byron kit Ryan ST-A, 90"ws 66"long, about 18lbs.
I at first was going to put a Ryobi 31cc in it but now it appears the 46cc Poula is better and cheaper, OTOH what I do have and willing to convert is what I think is a 60cc MAC 610 chainsaw, the number on the Walbro is #21-245-2 can this identify it better? Only other thing is to see if it is a viable fit, the cowl is long and roomy though. |

Can the ryobi idea not enough power and the poulan 46 or homie 45 would be a good match just not quite unlimited vertical but a ryan really looks funny hovering anyway.with the mac I bet you would have unlimited vertical.

Ok rcign told me what I need and will pick them up tomorrow and will get her all set up monday night and I will have some #s for sure on tuesday evening eeeeeee I can't wait !
Darin ps I was able to cut alot of weight off of my 1/3 staudacher so the airframe weighs 9.75 lbs that is with gear. wheels,wheelpants, cowl and canopy so if I can get this turd under 18 lbs wet ready to fly I might put this engine in it . this leaves me with ignition,radio gear,servos,covering, control linkages, motor mount,tail wheel and misc. hardware. do you think I can get all this in there under 5 lbs.... Glad to see one chopped up. I have one in the shop awaiting modification. Have total new upper end, will have to experiment on old head for fin chopping!

well I checked everywhere and all I got was a blank stare and no cross referances so I will order the hall effect switch and mag from ch and have #s as soon as posible.

I have been doing a ton of searching the web on STIHLs, found out a few things I didn't know, they are made in Germany, and you cannot buy a new Stihl over the web unless its Ebay, some Stihl corp. policy, also that at Ebay the bic cc Stihls can be bought cheap, look for used concrete cutting saws.
Maybe a Stihl conversion is better than a Poulan, besides I'm german and for the most part anything made in Germany is rock solid and of the highest quality. |

Hold off on the cutting saws they are alot heavier more like the husqvarna, the piston, con rod, case, crank I mean everything is alot more robust and with it comes weight I looked at every available machine prettymuch known to man and the stihl is one of the lightest ones out there and yes they can be had quite cheaply because there is alot of them out there.
I did get it running lastnight but it had a air leak at manofold and when it was warmed up it would not start because it made the carb hot so with all the problems I had I still managed to hit it with a tach barely long enough to get 7350 on a jz zinger 22 6-10 so I just need a carb manifold for it and I will be able to get real #'s Darin |
