echo 22.8 cc gas engine
hello, im new to gas and conversions and i just got a echo 22.8cc i think weedeater that i wish to convert to aircraft use. I got the engine pretty much stripped down but heres the problem, there is a centrifical spelling? clutch on the end of the crank and i have no clue of how to get it off, as well as the flywheel. So far it looks as i will not be able to use the engine as a coversion unless i take the flywheel off as well because the crank is so short. any suggestions? ill try to get pics asap but i cant find the cord for my sis digital cam right now. thanks

RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
I remove the plug and stuff some 1/4" rope into the cylinder, this will serve as a STOP for the piston, and allows using a socket to remove nut on the flywheel & clutch. Nut should be right-hand on weedies but look at threads to be sure. Nut and flywheel may have a bit of threadlock compound on them, some heat may help.

RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
There a lot of conversion parts out there for Echo engines because they make excellent conversions.
|
RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
unless the clutch is threaded on directly there isnt any nut on it. ill have to get some pics on here

RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
I don't know if this is the same but I had a motor that had a clutch on the shaft. There was a place were the cable would fit into the clutch. Look in there, with a good light, mine had a Allen screw in that spot. Check that spot for different screws, not just allen heads.

RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
ok this has no screw inside the clutch, the clutch is like screwed onto the actual shaft cuz i can see threads on the inside of the clutch

RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
Left handed thread.
Put about a foot of 1/4" cotton rope in spark plug hole. Remove springs and shoes. I used a punch and a hammer for this next step. Turn the clutch counter clockwise it will loosen in a 1/4 turn or so. Piece of cake. |
RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
ok i got the springs halfway off but i cannot get the shoes to budge, it seems the flywheel is keeping them from sliding off. will any type of rope work? i dont think i have any cotton rope, but i do have the type that you burn the ends, i have no clue what type it is. thanks for the info.

RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
ralph, I think you mis spoke a bit, you said left hand threads, then said turn it counterclockwise to get it off... those are opposite statements...
if you have a harborfreight store near by you, they have universal span wrenches that would work great for that purpose, the prongs in the wrenche would go in the two holes in the clutch, and if you put rope in the cylinder and firmly held the engine while turning the clutch it should come off without much of a problem. I used the same idea with my chainsaw engine, I just had to reinforce the span wrench so it would stop folding, but their universal unit is a lot beefier than what came with one of my $10 angle grinders... |
RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
You're right you need to turn it Clockwise to remove it, sorry.
The synthetic rope is okay, cotton is just easier on the engine. You will never use the clutch, so dinging it a little will make no difference at all. You could put the clutch in a vise and unscrew it once you put the rope in the cylinder. I just found it easier to knock it loose. |
RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
It is very easy to make a spanner wrench...faster than finding a harbor freight store!!!!! Capt,n

Caution !!!!! Not ALL of these are lefthanded

Does the fan shroud have a decal on the outside of the case? If you can post the part & serial # we can check the part number of the clutch hub. |
RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
well heres the number off the side of the cover that houses the drive unit the clutch engages,
SRM-2400 and then it has 006615 as a serial # i guess. |

With those # it looks like you have a SRM-2400T1E 23.6cc. The clutch assem should have R/H threads. To see the documentation go to WWW.echo-usa.com and search thier tech.documents. If you can see the shaft at the rear of the engine, the threads will be the same as at the flywheel end. I have torn down several of these engines. To take the clutch hub off , use the rope down the plug hole to block the piston travel. |
RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
ok so i have to turn it to the left? or the right?
|
RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
ive converted 4 of these.put rope in cylinder, any rope.take a punch, bigger the better.hold onto the engine and take the punch and put it on the right hand side of one of the square corners.hit it with a hammer forcing the punch to push the clutch counterclockwise or to the left looking straight at the clutch.should come loose after just a couple hits when done right.

RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
ok thanks for the help guys, i got both the clutch and the little thing on the back for the starter to engage off. do any of you all have any other suggestions for making this conversion easier or better? if you do just say what you think, im taking all suggestions. thx

RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
right hand threads on all 21 and 23 Echo weedies I have seen. The same engine on hedge trimmers are left hand as thread this forum discusses. Sent you a PM

RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
well since i have to remove the flywheel to get the prop on how would you all reccomend for ignition? gas/glow or should i just get a electronic ignition.
|
RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
I have had good luck with gas-glow.
Give it a try if for some reason it doesn't work out for you spend the extra $80.00 to $120.00 and buy an electronic ignition. |

newguy05: You do not need to remove flywheel to place prop on engine. Just add a prop adapter...then prop. In the added photo the part on the crankshaft is the center of the flywheel. I am going to do the 2nd engine with stock flywheel ignition. This one is for Gas/glow or electronic ignition. Capt,n

RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
where is the best place to get one or instructions to make one easily, im 17 with no job so im tryin to make do with what i have. thanks
|
RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
Ralphbf, do you know or happen to have a good set of instructions to mix gas/glow. i just need to know like how much of each to mix and what to use. thanks for any info.
|
RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
1 part 10/10 glow fuel and 2 parts gasoline is the standard mix.
The lower the compression the more nitro you need. You can buy quarts of fuel through Tower Hobbies for making small batches. but the cost is almost as much as a gallon of fuel at the LHS. |
RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
Make sure to use hi-test gasoline though
|
RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
ok i think i am not going to be able to use this engine on my 60 sized p-51. so i am thinking about building a spad but i dont know exactly how big to build it for this engine. any reccomendations?

RE: echo 22.8 cc gas engine
At least 1000 square inches, 1200 would be better.
I have a clipped wing Cub 1300 sq. inch and a 25cc Toro on it. It flys good. I streached the nose out 3 inches so it would balance with no added weight. It would of been 1 1/2 pounds. |
