Tiny magneto
 

I am interested in turning a small maybe 1-1/2"to 2" diameter?, lightweight flywheel/rotor on the lathe, similar to what is used on small motorcycle engines , possibly inserting neodymium or ceramic magnets from the Bay.

This particular engine is a low time, O/R 22cc general purpose unit, using free air cooling/bump starting,gasoline fueled.
While I understand many go with electronic ignition , I need to stay with a mag.

I’ve been around RCU for years, but found this forum via Google while searching
ideas for a very light weight/compact, motor assist bicycle project I’m working on.

Maybe there is a tiny flywheel/coil assm.from one of engines that you guys use, that I could modify?(my old school engine still has points that I also would like to eliminate.)

If anyone has done this with a Weedy type engine, or knows how it might be done, I sure would appreciate it. Threads, or offsite links would be sweet. While we have different applications,it seems the goals of light weight, compactness,and cool factor are simalar. :-)

Why not make it a gas/glow engine. No points or flywheel...saves weight! AV8TOR can tell you hwow! best Regards, Capt,n

The Sullivan unit would be an interesting future add on
for light weight, low voltage auxiliary equipment.

That might be a problem when I ride into a gas station across town and ask the attendant:
“Hey,fill'er up with gas/glow high test!” :D

With the fuel mileage you would get...just fill her up before you go across town. HA! Capt,n:D

As I mentioned, it isn't what you are looking for, but you could make a very light weight self sustaining system out of it. Electronic ignition, a small 4.8 volt battery pack, and the charging system to keep it charged.

I imagine the parts are expensive, but look into the Fuji and Zenoah engine ignition systems. They have a small rotor magneto such as you describe.

Zenoah ,and if it’s just collecting dust on the shelf… Please shoot me a PM

I'd like try to rework the bore to fit my O&R,then fab a bracket to mount the coil.
