RE: 42cc engines?
Captin, do you ever have a nead for a faceplate, 5" four jaw chuck, steady rest or follow rest that does not come with this lathe. Is there a source for these 8x accessories?

RE: 42cc engines?
I finally got a chance to pull the jug and take some measurements. The bore is 1.42" and the stroke is 1.26" which are the exact measurements of the Duropower 32.6cc engine. I am not going to worry about ccing it, I will just go off of these measurements.
The piston, rings and cylinder look great. Hopefully my lathe will be here in a few days and I can cut down the flywheel and use it for the pickup ring. Does anyone know of a bigger carb that will bolt up to this engine. |

RE: 42cc engines?
My HF 8x12(8x14) should be in Friday. Thanks for the reply Capt,n.

RE: 42cc engines?
flaminheli: Be ready to have 2 very strong guys to move it around. For some buying a lathe, you can have it delivered to a nearby business...like a hardware store-ect. A place were you do business will sometimes unload it for you. The lathe may come in a truck thats pretty high to just lift a lathe off by hand. Just a thought! Capt,n

RE: 42cc engines?
Thanks Capt,n , it will ship directly to the local HF store on one of their trucks on a usual Friday shipment "saved the shipping charge", when I go to pick it up they can worry about loading it in my truck but when I get it home I will use my engine picker to unload it. Feels like Christmas:D

RE: 42cc engines?
i keep forgetting about the duropower site, ill go check it out.

RE: 42cc engines?
Yeah Buck, check out Duropower, $119.00 for a new 52cc is not bad. They have a nice looking 4 stroke for $149.00, looks like it might make a nice conversion.

RE: 42cc engines?
For those that might care I have been working on a twin crankcase for the two 33cc engines that I have. The sketches are rough and not exact but the measurements are exact and in MM's there are still a few bugs to work out. The bolts on the crankcase shown on the sideview will not be in that location on the final design and the rear of the crankcase needs a little more meat for a mount. I can use 2 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 2" pieces of aluminum for the front and rear crankcase halves, that will give me plenty of work area and still need quite a bit machined off. It his hard to put ideas on paper but seems easier to visualize it as it is being made. I have my new HF 8X14 lathe but have not had a chance to set it up, it is still sitting in the crate on the floor, I also purchased from LMS a hand full of HSS bits and boring bars. I think I may be able to use a drillpress with an Y & Z vise to machine out the stock, any ideas? This is just a project in the makings, if it does not work out then I will just chalk it up as a learning experience. This project will be a long drawn out one for the simple fact that I only mess with it in my spare time. I still need to locate a set of reed valves and all needed pieces of it before final measurements can be made, it seems the old Homelite models will work and have located several good used ones that I need to go get.

RE: 42cc engines?
Hey, go for it! You might want to go ahead and cut/join the two cranks before you finalize dimensions. On the BME twin that I built I had to work at it a bit to get the mated crank parts short enough to fit into the BME case. Might be a good idea to make the case slightly oversize and use shim washers at the ends of the crank.
It will be interesting to see how this turns out. Good luck, AV8TOR |
RE: 42cc engines?
Thanks AV8TOR, I plan on joining the two cranks together before any machining begins, that way I can fit as I machine. It would be nice to have a CNC mill. I think I may be able to fabricate a milling attachment that will be large enough to hold the aluminum stock on the lathe, or just use a compound milling vise on the drillpress with an endmill. All of this is still a ways away.

RE: 42cc engines?
It might be tough to keep good tolerances with a drill press, but hey, give it a try. I'm holding off on any experiments like this until I can get my hands on a mill.
I would like to make an 80 to 100cc twin. One of these days.... AV8TOR |

RE: 42cc engines?
I have been looking into it and have come to realize that a drillpress really is not rigid enough to handle the lateral pressure or precise enough to make good cuts, so I have scratched that idea and will just hold out for a mill. Other than that little set back how do you guys think the sketches look so far? Do you think it can be done? I have triple checked the measurements and they all seem reliably accurate.
|
RE: 42cc engines?
Of course it can be done. Almost anything can be done with enough patience and perseverence. Give it a go once you get a mill. You may mess up a part or two until you get it right, but think of the sense of accomplishment you'll have (and bragging rights!) when it's done and running.

RE: 42cc engines?
One question for the anyone with or without a mill, I don't want to buy a mill that is just big enough to get the job done, in other words I want one I will be able to use in the future for larger projects. Does anyone recommend a proper size mill in the under $1,200.00 price range, "may be hard to accomplish". If anyone wants to use these measurements and give it a try please do so. It would not hurt my fealings if someone did it before me. You will find they are very accurate and are based on the Duropower 33cc engine and utilizing the stock bearings, jugs, pistons and cranks. I have planed on joinig the cranks just liked yall did in the BME build. The engines are relatively cheap at $100.00 each.

RE: 42cc engines?
I think I may have found one. What do you guys think?
