Poulan Conversions

Why would you want to replace the RCS 1.4 with a conversion? Heard the 1.4 is a great engine. Just want more power? Also, what does your H9 Edge weigh with the RCS 1.4? How much more will the conversion weigh?

I have about 1.5 hours on my 46 and the compression is still low. I know it has a ways to go for break in but will I notice a big increase in compression and performance?

these engines do not have alot of compresion to them when you turn them over slowly , you can do better with a frank bowman ring I looked at the ring and it seems alot like the ryobi with a rounded edge so a square cut ring may be the way to go but mine runs fine at the lower compresion.

bn120: Or anyone else! What do you suppose the purpose of the sorta rounded ring is? Was it a move to make these engines more easy to turn faster with a recoil starter? Thanks Captinjohn :)

most rings take on a slight barrel shape after a good break-in. i would think that the round ring edge is there to quicken break-in and make the saw useable straight out of the box.

Zagnut: I think you may have a good point there. Sounds like you may have done engine work quite often. Do you do it as a job or as a hobby? Thanks Capti,n

been ruining engines since i was 5. :D
i love anything pistons, even compressors, but it's mostly a hobby.
i especially like straight sixes as i'm a first generation Z-car freak. here's what i do for a living http://www.craftmen.co.il

back to the subject, i think the low compression is probably due to a single ring and low comp. ratio normally found on these engines. if you could find a piston the same size but with 2 rings and a slightly taller crown it might be worth quite a bit of power. you might need to cut the crown a bit and work on the ports but it should work.

zagnut: Thanks for the reply. I tried the game and got 160 points on the 5 th try.....kinda fun. Take care Capt,n

250 first try, 630 2nd try... Dave, you need to add a "Top 50 High scores" counter.

That's some interesting work you've done. I particularily like the bathtub.

the most fun was mixing 500+kg of epoxy for the bartops :drowning:

isn't epoxy r/c related?

the rounded edges are there on the ryobi for rpm limiter I dont know about the poulan though I have never had the rpm above 7200.

what are the steps in converting a poulan , say 46cc to fly?

i guess the carb needs to be mounted, and maybe either an electronic ignition to get rid of the flywheel. but what about mounting the prop? do you all buy the prop adaptor from one of the conversion places?

help, im considering this route for gas..

All you have to do is shave the flywheel, get a resistor sparkplug, and prop mount. I can supply these items to you. Contact me offline.

herb,
im guessing you havent run it yet? did you take it out of the chainsaw, just needs the carb mounted? or is it slightly used or?

i m interesed.

Poulan 46cc

Ronbo,
I pulled it from a used chainsaw.
Everything looks good on it, good compression, spark.

Haven't ran it though.

I haven't had time to make, or order a carb mainfold for it.
I know CH makes one. Haven't researched it.

I had the prophub made for it with 8mm x 1 threads so it's not a cross-threaded 5/16x24.....the shaft is metric unlike the ryobis and homlites.

I recommend the flywheel be machined, trim the fins and balance.
Unless you go with the CH conversion kit...I have one on my 42cc and it's top notch!!...

Let me know, shoot me an e-mail so we don't clutter up this thread....thanks!

4lbs is excellent for a magneto Poulan + the rather heavy H9 aluminum mount. You did well. If memory serves me correct, my 46cc with CH Ignition, Abell muffler, and GP 1.20-1.80 weighed about 4lbs RTF.

BTW, does the Poulan 42cc, 36cc, 33cc have the same exhaust opening and bolt spacing as the 46cc?

how much power are you all getting from that engine?

what planes? be nice to know for future projects i have in mind...

Mine is over 4lbs with the Mag ignition and a header. I cant recall the exact ounces but it wasnt much over.
As for power from what Ive read most guys are getting in the high 6000 range with a 20X10. Ive gotten 6800~6900 with a square tip Zinger 20X10. Ive seen the engine in a Wagstaff Extra ARF here on RCU. Its a great engine and any plane that is designed for the 30cc to 50cc gas engines would be fine with it.
