Here's a pic of my Poulan 46 conversion. I tried to test run it but it won't spark. It's on the stock magneto. Am I not turning it fast enough? I pulled the plug and spun it pretty quick but nothing. help?

It's the kill switch, tried it open and closed.

The only other I can think of is the gap at the magneto.
I put a paper card to set the gap.

Could it ever be too close? Ran fine in the saw, I did drop it when removing it from the saw but, it landed on the spark plg and didn't even break that. Checked the coil with a meter and getting 30k ohms between the kill switch lead and ground and the same from center electrode and ground.

If you are using the same plug from when you dropped it, it might have a internal crack and shorting, try a new plug just use one from anything to check for spark or use a screwdriver in the boot and hold it close to the engine and see if you get a spark with out a plug but most times you dork a plug it will short internaly.

The only way the coil can be too close is if it's hitting the flywheel. The closer the better. As posted above, try a new plug. Also try taking your kill switch off of the coil, maybe you've got a bad switch or a wire shorting on the block?

Thanks for the help, folks. I tunrned it over with my started and started to get some fire @ about 1000 rpm. No hand starts for this one! My starter turns it slower than my hand with the spark plug in, guess it is going to be electronic soon! Funny thing is, I'm spinning it as fast as a pull starter but still no spark.

My Ryobi 4 stroke will spark by hand (mag). I have not finished the conversion yet so I don't know if it will start by hand yet.

Started it by putting a starter cup on my drill (after a couple hours work putting a spinner on). Has to turn over 1-2 seconds before she gets going. The stock muffler really holds this back! Only 5800 on a 20x8 MA wood. 6600 with no muffler. Just some tests, going to get an ignition for it soon.

I don't use these on my planes yet but I have repaired over 100 of them. I suggest you replace the plug and check the clearance on the mag to flywheel. Use a piece of cardstock Manilla folder to set the clearance. You should have spark with the plug removed and turning the shaft by hand. If the plug gap is .018. The spark should be blue not redish orange, I suspect you have a bad ignition coil. If there is not a good spark with the plug out it will be worse under compression. Good luck.

I know all of myRryobi's (4 and 2 stroke) will show a spark with the plug out but won't fire by hand. Then I tried a 14.4volt cordless drill and it wouldn't fire at that speed (400-500rpm?). Now I always use an electric starter and just burned one up by leaving it on to long. I ordered another one and built a belt-drive similar to Miller's Persuader. 2.2:1 reduction. I plan to run it on about 16volts. Should provide ample torque.

Das, Tks. The spark is orange at best and only when it's turning 1000+. With the plug out I can't get it to spark by hand, prob 5-600 rpm. Sounds like a bad coil.

Oh, did change plug, I used a j8j and was a little better but hardly noticable.

I can start mine by hand only if it is warm, if the low end is not rich enough it will be hard to hand start, I would warm it up and richen the low end and try again.my spark does not shine bright blue either.I will bring home my multimeter and check the resistance on mine to see if I get the same as yours, no need to buy one if it is good.

Well, even warm it took 1-2 seconds with a starter to get it going. I won't buy another coil, I have a lead on a CH from a guy at the field. Hope he'll let it go cheap! It is set up for a 1/4-32 plug. Is the only difference the cap?

if it takes that long the low end is likely lean.you can order a new cap from ch

h82crash, if you haven't used battery ign before you don't know what you're missing! i refused to use them until someone gave me some for free. they then sat on the shelf for a year until i decided to convert a weedie, wanted to kick myself for not doing it sooner. ch is the way to go just make sure it is synchro-spark or you might have to rig some type of throttle-coupled advance or maybe two separate sensors, one for starting then switch to the second one for running. maybe a switch on the throttle arm could do this to.

It is a prop adaptor I made. I cut the head off an 8 x 1.00 bolt and set it in the adaptor with locktite. The nut is the stock Poulan nut from the flywheel, it is larger than other available nuts. I did it this way because the stud won't wear the threads in the aluminum and I won't have to be as carefull tighting the prop nut. Also way easier to mount a spinner adaptor.
