Stihl - My First Conversion is to begin

I know before i can ask for any help i need to let you guys know what im using. Its an engine off an older Stihl FS 66 Trimmer. I dont know the displacement - anyone know?

Would like to keep it a gas burner, and use stock ignition, but the coil is large and heavy. Where do you guys get those tiny ones im seeing in other posts? And magnetos? Can I use a tiny hub instead of flywheel to reduce weight?

I wanna do this right! Money is also tight but can spend a bit - especially if i can find a Pitts muffler for my exhaust [8D]
Also-cant wait to see the look on my wife's face when i tell her i can make a weedeater fly!

Boy as I recall that motor is 25cc. I also think that it was used on the FS72 & 76 straight shaft trimmers too. By the time you buy the smaller hub, coil etc you may as well just buy an EI ignition. My opinion only.

does it look like the one on the left.If so its a 25.9cc.I started this one but need new rings. The one on the right is the 28cc(27.2 actual).Thats a 17x8 prop on it.RTF it weighs 3-1/4lbs.I have a new tach but havent tested it with this engine yet.The 25.9 is suppose to be better and stronger because it comes from the pro-series as ive been told.I have prop hubs or can make you a special one if ya want on my lathe.Ive made a couple 6bolt.If ya have any questions PM me and ill help or just post it back here.Good luck but youll find out that one engine just isnt enough.

I think I have the same engine and would like to convert it. It doesn't run right now but has great compression. Problem is I don't know where to get conversion parts for it. Does anyone know of a source for the parts or do they have to be custom made? I would like to use an electronic ignition.

Go to chignitions and see what engines he has parts for. Also try wackerengines.jagengines,carrprecision.Also keep putting your engine in the search feature here on rcu.I do echos and stills basiclly.I have done homelites and ryobis but there not my favorite.

Update:Finally bought my new tach,Fromec TNC.My engine from post 3 was running at 7696 WOT,best that i got out of it.After this i richened it up a hair so its at a steady 74-7500.Idle is 18-1900.An apc17x8 is what im using. Its a stock ch ign with no advance set at 26-28 BTDC,dont remember exactly.Transition was very good.Bought this off of ebay for less than 50.00 already converted so i dont know anything about it except it was used.It did not come with the ch ign.Now i need to go buy an airplane.

ok finally getting back to finish this project. it is a stihl 20cc \ 1.2 cu in. gonna run GloGas! i have a glow plug adapter now and have bought my ceramic engine paint and primer. all excess weight has been removed with grinder and dremmel. it is cleaned like a babys but after a diaper change. It is time to rock n roll...

2 issues.....

[sm=confused.gif]should i make prop hub out of the flywheel or find someone who can make one?

[sm=50_50.gif]the nut that holds on the flywheel to crankshaft is reverse threaded. will that cause a problem.

thanks for any input

Just run the engine backwards with a pusher prop and the threads may not be a problem!!! Not sure on that.:D Capt,n

really... i was thinking blue threadlock.....???

RE: Stihl - My First Conversion is to begin

If the threads are left hand....the prop may just come loose when engine fires!!! Be carefull. Capt,n [X(]

[&:]thanks for the warning captJohn.

still need to turn my flywheel into a hub, then drill/tap end of crank for a stud for a prop nut. Do you guys think that would work??

thanks

Hey all

Got er done. had to find a left hand tap 8mm dia 125pitch.

now can use electric starter to get it tuned up!

will also have to re paint the yellow on the front because i didnt let the paint cure properly before i first ran it. its scuffed up from a chicken stix, fuel etc...

will post a final pic when done with that. now.. to find a bird to put it on, the hunt begins
