ryobi cs30 weedie conversion?

got a ryobi cs30 weedie real cheap and comenced with the conversion, got it down to 4lb.4oz. using everything stock other then adding a prop hub, mounted to the stand and i get 7300 on the top end with a 16x8 prop,my ? is will this be enough for a thundertiger bearcat,my auw will be at around 14lb.,i did have a spc 26 on her last year but the motor was poop+i had to add 24oz to the nose to balance with the spc ,with flaps deployed at 20* the plane is a real kittycat to takeoff and land, they saved my butt on quite a few ocasions with bad motor adjustments, btw i think the engine looks more like a homey then a ryobi, starts nice and runs sweet lmk what you think

RE: ryobi cs30 weedie conversion?

If the carb is on one side of the engine and the exhaust on the other, it is probably a homie. If the carb is o the back of the CARANKCASE, and the exhaust is on the back of the cylindar it is probably a RYOBI. However, RYOBI has built engines for other companies, I have a "STIHL" that is built by RYOBI, and I believe that HOMELITE now ownes RYOBI. To answer your question, I have a Ryobi modified with a bigger carb and C & H ignition that turns a 18 X 8 wood prop close to 7800 to 8000. It also sports a "FRANK BOWMAN" ring. We are at 3700 feet altitude, so I think that is good. FLATHEAD 4

thanks flathead,i ended up removing the plate from the muffler and went to a 15x10 apc and got the rpms up to 7800,mounted it in the plane and off i went,it flys the bearcat sweet!!!!!!!!! i marked the factory settings with a dremel cause the needles had no slots for adjustments and the high end needed just a kiss lean and the low end needed nothing,my auw is at around 13lbs,with 20* of flap on takeoff it was a real kittycat, does around 60-65mph,now for a conversion that got no power hopups at all,all stock other then removing nthe guts from the muff and adding a prophub and motor mount i'm very impressed to say the least!! i can still shed about 6oz. of weight if i wanted, did'nt even touch the flywheel(looks like a radial in the cowl) this motor has real potential for more power! i'll post pics of it in the plane

I took the RYOBI to the P.O. this AM, and here are the specs. Engine with the following. Cup mount, Muffler (subject to change), prop hub and backing washers with nut, Electronic ignition (less battery). Three pounds six ounces. I think I could shave at least 2 ounces off if I replace the cup mount with a flat plate. I currently have a higher modified engine in progress, and I will try and keep you informed as I go along. On the way home, I stopped at my favorite junk dealer, and now I have three more weedies, and three Homelite Chainsaws. Chainsaws are from 20 cc to 50cc. FLATHEAD 4

RE: ryobi cs30 weedie conversion?

Guys if the weedy is a yellow boom Ryobi it is really a Homey 30cc. Black boom weedy is a true Ryobi, produced by MTD. The Homey/Ryobi (atleast the one I have) must be a newer design because the cylinder has more fins and the porting is a little different. Mine spins an 18x6 @ 7000 and unlike my older Homey 30cc, will easily hand start.

RE: ryobi cs30 weedie conversion?

OK, thanks for the info. I have a Ryobi block and piston that I aquired that has two intake ports on each side, and a more oval exhaust port ( no brace in the middle). It is twin ring, but according to Frank Bowman, maybe a single ring is better. At any rate, I will be playing around with this arraingment. I have a degree wheel and will see if there is any difference in port timing and head space. At any rate, as soon as my new Bowman ring arrives, I will be checking things out and keep the info flowing.
Another question I have. Does MTD own both RYOBI and Homelite?

RE: ryobi cs30 weedie conversion?

I doubt MTD owns Homelite as we were not allowed to do any warranty work on the Homey/Ryobi (we are an MTD dealer).

Hey all I just got one of these today, could'nt resist only $69.After doing my yard work I took it to the far corner of the shop and took all of the "non airplane" stuff off.Now I don't know who owns who but my engine has "Feng Long"on the flywheel. It looks like a Homey/Ryobi/MTD engine. From what I can see it fits Flathead's description.I want to put this engine on my USL 120 which currently has a BCMA 26 on it.Any thoughts?

Captn, heres my ryobi,3lbs,4oz.I rounded the cylinder to make it look a little better. The mount is a piece of aluminum rectangular stock.I dont remember if i gutted the muffler or not but i dont think so.The weight includes the ign but not the battery.Magnet[hub sensor is cut out of flywheel and turned.]I only had it running on a 16x8 because its brand new and not broke in so theres no sense in posting rpms.I sold it already.

RE: ryobi cs30 weedie conversion?

Hey Bladejunkie, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I believe the name on the flywheel will be PHELON which is a company that makes lots of flywheels. does the carb mount on the side of cylinder(common for homies and MC) or is on the back of the engine. This is typical of RYOBI's. Post a reply and any other questions you might have. flathead 4

RE: ryobi cs30 weedie conversion?

Flathead, the name on the flywheel is "Feng Long" this is a made in China Homey30cc,it looks to be a little higher quality than my American made Homey 30cc.The name on the American made flywheel is Phelon as you said. The casting work on the Chinese engine looks a lot cleaner than the USA engine.I also have a 25cc Homey, and it seems to have the most power of the three,it's also American made. The American engines are well broken in,the Chinese engine has only edged my yard once,so it has a ways to go before being broken in.I spoke with Mr.Haas of Wacker Engines the other day,I bought all the stuff I needed for my conversion from him,and he says it seems to be a powerfull little engine. If you need stuff for conversions on Ryobi's or Homelite's he's the guy to talk to.I might also add he is a pleasure to talk to,he's one of us.

Thanks Jim

RE: ryobi cs30 weedie conversion?

Is this a reed valve engine like the RYObI or does the carb go straight into the cylinder. Flathead

Bladejunkie 08-26-2008 12:16 AM

RE: ryobi cs30 weedie conversion?

Flathead, the carb and exhaust are on the sides of the cylinder. This engine is a very good copy of an American made Homelite engine.
