Stihl four stroke models....
 

Hi,

Does anyone know what all the various sizes of Stihl four strokes are? I have a small Stihl four stroke and I don't know what size it is. I am too busy to take it apart to measure it at the moment, but I am curious as to the sizes that were made. I believe it is a 36cc but I am not sure. It is a bummer that Stihl does not provide any parts or service info on the web....

Anyone have any prop/rpm figures for the Stihl four stroke 36cc??

There are 28, 32, 36 and 65cc models. The cooling fins are bigger on the 36 than on the 32, otherwise they look the same. I don't have any 28s. I just finished a 36 for a buddy but am still breaking it in and so I haven't tached it yet. It definitely felt more powerful on the stand, though.
Do you know the model# of the weed whacker it came out of?

Ok, thanks guys. Nobody with prop/rpm numbers for various Stihl four strokes? Are they stronger than the Honda GX31?

Ok, curiousity got the best of me and I took it apart. It is a 32cc. (Bummer, I was hoping for a 36!)

Ok, finally found the Stihl four stroke 32cc thread. It appears as though it will have a good bit more power than the Honda 31. That's cool! Maybe when I get it done it will replace the Honda on my Giant Eindekker.

I got a FS110R string trimmer for $10.00 from our local lawn mower shop. I came home with it and setit aside. Last weekend I decided to see if it started and it did without muchcoaxing and ran like a champ. Long story short, the crankshaft is barely as long as the flywheel which makes it useless for a conversionengine.

Yeah, the crankshaft is short, but it can be done:) The crankshafts for the Honda and Subaru/Robin/Fujis aren't much better but again they can and have been done. If nothing else you got yourself a heck of a weed whacker for $10

If the FS110 is used for a conversion, I'm at a loss as to how one can use the flywheel/mag as it's configured from the factory. The only way I see
to use the engine is to useaVERYshort prop hub with an electonic ignition.

It surely is a good idea to keep the hub short, but I am working on a solution for that so I can have a longer hub. I have done about a dozen 32s now (both mag and EI )and in MHO, they aren't too shabby. They are compact, run inverted, and have decent power.

I've never seen one but, could you make the hub so that the prop shaft fits inside the hub and over the end of the crank? Possibly some variation of the attached photos? Using this method the par tof the hub that fits ove the taper could be little more than a thick washer.

Of course you can. The short shaft Ryobi conversion kits are done similar to your photos. Where there's a will there's a way! I would probably just make up a hub with a taper that screws right onto the shaft however....

I never run magnetos.
On a four stroke, you can just use an electronic ignition for a two stroke. It doesn't affect a thing that the plug also fires on the exhaust stroke. I have my Honda GX-31 four stroke set up that way.

I have a Ryobi 26cc 4stroke on the bench alongwith the Stihl 4 stroke.The Stihl hands-down has much more power and rpms. I guess I'll have to fireup the lathe
and make a shaft extension so that I can use the factory mag with it. I don't have weights for each of the engines, but it appears that the Stihl is noticeably lighter. I also like the
fact that I don't have the added weight of engine oiland a sump to deal with like the Honda and Ryobi.I know that my local lawn mower shop has afew more of the Stihl weed whackers available, so
I might buy one or two more if this conversion is successful. He's a Stihl dealer and is more than happy to sell me what heconsiders "junk". I seen that he has two shelves full of dead chainsaws, so Iguess I'll have to check them out on my next visit.

Where is a good place to buy an electronic ignition? Maybe I need to come out of the stone age and try one...lol.

another good place is the marketplace here, there's a RC EXL ignition on there almost all the time for around $60

Does anyone sell short blocks or refurbished units? The Stihl FS 130 looks perfect for my 1/4 scale D-7 project.

Stihl dealers will sell you a short-block. A new 36 at my dealer was @ $185. Keep in mind there is no mag ignition,carb or manifold, but if you go with EI you don't need the mag anyway.
