My new project: Tecumseh

I scored a used snow blower for $20 and it has a 60cc Tecumseh engine in it that I think will make a descent conversion with a little work. It runs very strong and not even broke in yet.
Anyone done one of these yet? It has 2 piston rings and lots of compression, I can still see the crosshatch pattern in the cylinder wall and the micro-grooves in the piston rings. It has ball bearing in the front and a "cartridge" bearing in the rear (I'm guessing a needle bearing) |

Looks like a worthwhile subject for conversion to me.. I have done similar engines from an MTD 4.5 horsepower 2 stroke and it worked great..just replace the carb with a crankcase pulse type and give it a try. The adapter for the carb can be a bit of a challenge but I'm sure you can make one. Take the pulse direct from the crankcase and you should be fine.

Got some progress done on it.
I cut the back part of the cank shaft off and trued the end in my lathe. I machined all the exess material off of the front plate. I am going to test weld an extra piece of the crankcase that I cut off, If I can weld it I'll machine the carburetor mount and make my own so it's not so goofy to deal with. Or I'll just machine a block to fit this goofy mount out of PTFE. |

Well the alloy that the crankcase is made out of gas welds quite well with 5356 alloy filler wire. Now I have to decide if i want to weld my own carburetor plate on the intake port. Hmmmmmm, descisions descisions.
I guess I'll have to decide how far I want to take it. I am also drawing up some plans to modify the crankshaft, The current setup has a huge diameter crankshaft. It appears to be about the same hardness all the way through the crank, so reducing the diameter I think would be worthwhile for weight savings. |

Heres another model of a Tecumseh. The one on the left is a 35cc the one on the right is a 50cc. Thats a 52 4 stroke glow motor for size comparison.

My original post is incorrect it is actually a 98cc engine:D. I have machined off the goofy carburetor mount and made a flat one all I have to do is weld it on to the intake port.
I'm in the process or spec'ing out a carburetor for it, I think I'm going to go with a Walbro WJ series, the exact model kind of depends on what I can come up with for not a pile of money. I am also a little concerned about the cooling fins, it seems like it is a little short on cooling, probably because it's a snow thrower engine where it would be used in cold weather. I'll just have to be diligent about proper cooling when I get around to installing it. I'll post some more pics after I get the welding done, I'm going to TIG it because the new plate fits so well. |

I've got some big old walbro's and Tillotsons that might work well for that... I'll try to look in my stash later tonite

Because of the minimal cooling fins, why not put it on a methanol diet? Should run cooler and maybe make a little more power. Cost shouldn't be much more but you'll have to pick an alky carb.

I thought about that, I have successfully ran walbro carburetors on methanol with no nitro before with no modification, I'll see how it does on gas first.

A couple more pics. I got the Mounting plate welded on and I got a good WJ series walbro with a 17.5 mm venturi for it.
I'm looking for a small piece of electrical grade PTFE to machine a spacer out of, I'll start on the prop hub one of these days, I haven't had much time lately. |
