The timing advance/retard doesn't exactly go along with my thoughts.

Could you eleborate on your timing goals?

I would think the timing should be zero at 5,000 rpm.

The retard should be 14 degrees at 2000 rpm

Getting above 8000 rpm it should begin to retard again for high performance applications?

There are 40 place free to program, same like all other settings.
The CDI is not only for 2stroke, but you can also use it for 4 stroke engines.
With some knowledge it'seven possible to use this CDI like a TCI.
Wat you see into the pictureis only to show wat we have make.
We work hard to finish the PCB's and cleanup the program.
I think (hope) within a fewweeks weare ready to release the CDI.

BTW: This desige is not a real opensource project like the two others we have done.
You get everything to build the project, programmer software, HEX-code and layouts.
We don't release the source codes of the programs.</p></blockquote></blockquote>

Hi, Gompy!Could you explain why you dont want to open source? For what reason? It is only your decision and i agree it. But I only interest why?

We want to build a commercial version too and maybe we need parts of the program and ASM-code.
It takes also to much time to communicate with every one and make changes for all wishes.
Now we present a complete ready to gopackage.

Is the price going to be completive with the RCxcell ignition that is so common now for Radio Control airplanes? Thanks Capt,n

I don't know if you get everything for free, layout and programms,is too much ?
If the CDI is ready, we present it on the website and you can download it.....fair enough ?

Rob, what pic is going to be used on this new CDI? I know there wasn't enough program space in the 16f628 to hold multiple curve tables.

Sounds fair to me Rob.

RE: Complete new CDI - website open

We are using for this CDIthe16F628a you all al ready have andit wasn't possible to put multi tables in it.
You can make onlyone table with 40 positions, but also possible the atable with 2 positions :o)
But I think we need no multitables in our models, it's handy for mini or motorbikes, not weedeaters.
The commercialCDI will be multi table with a lot more options like temerature, gear control, cooling aso.
This CDI have RS232 communication, the commercial CDI USB and for allthis options you need a differend (bigger)PIC.

BTW, the coomunication with the picisn't realy RS232, it's TTL.
On Ebay you can buy a small RS232 to TTL for only $3 or USB to TTL for $5, no postage orshippingcost.
http://shop.ebay.nl/?_from=R40&amp;_trks...All-Categories
http://shop.ebay.nl/i.html?_nkw=rs23...286.m270.l1313

For those who make it self, with a MAX232, 5 capicitors and a subD9 it's also possible to make a communicator.

I get 270Volt (4V5 input) from the HV-coil and is not enough, we need 400-600Volt.
I hope neymi have some information, otherwise I have to rice the Voltage on the coil.

Tomorrow I etsing the timerboard PCB for test, but I think it's OK.
Maybe we can release the timerboard without the HV-board.
You only have to use the flybacktransformer and not the pulstransformer.

RE: Complete new CDI - website open

Which of the TTL converters would you reccomend for use with the new timer board? I saw one for $3 and it looked good..cheaper is better?
Do you need software to have it recognized in windows? If we use the commercial units, are we only using the 4 output pins or are there 5 with the needed ground?

John

RE: Complete new CDI - website open

I order two different USB to TTL convertors on Ebay.
Most computers don't have RS232 any more, only USB.

With plastic cover and ready to use
http://cgi.ebay.nl/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...EOIBSA:NL:1123

PCB
http://cgi.ebay.nl/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...EOIBSA:NL:1123

RS232 cost less, for only $2,5 with shipping.

The programm can handle both convertors, USB and RS232.

BTW, the commercial CDI use the 3V3 option from the USB to TTL to power the pic....not the 5 Volt like the old pics.

Rob,

What Baudrate is thge pic set at? I got my 16mhz osc and when using it I don't get any green messages indicating that the datea is sent or received from the pic. If I use a 8 mhz osc then I get the green messages. I am using 19200 baud.

RE: Complete new CDI - website open

Wat kind of transceiver do you use, the one with the MAX232 ?
With the MAX232, and a 16Mhz RESONATOR on the timerboard, the bautrate I use without problems is 38400.
The USB2TTL dongel have some problems with the communication, they don't want to work in monitor mode.
You can use them to shoot the table and other settings into the PIC, but not for minitoring.(we work on it)

COM 07-16-2010 05:55 AM

RE: Complete new CDI - website open

Hi Rob,

The Transceiver is a max202. Its on a Easypic6 development board. Using a 16 Mhz Osc I can't communicate with the pic via Serial. When I use a 8 mhz then it all works well.

COM 07-16-2010 05:59 AM

RE: Complete new CDI - website open

OK setting the baud to 38400 and a 16 mhz osc works. You might want to mention the PC baud needs to be set this this to avoid problems.

In new software versions some options aren't there anymore.
The text is not complete at some settings, like * Pulse width*.....puls width of wat will they ask.
Also the communication with the USB2TTL have problems, the dongel can't follow the data.

Rob,

I am using a USB to serial dongle and everything works great.

Do you have test it in monitor mode with signal input on the hallsensor, or only to load the data into the timerboard ?

Hi Rob,

with the 16 Mhz xtal and the baud set to 38400 I get everything. If I click on the monitor tab I can see angel and RPm. IT works great.

I'll make a new HV-board, the old schematic needs to much calculation.
If some one choose a other Voltage, they need also other components.
For now you can use all the HV-boards we have made with the flyback transformer.

Hello iura..
The project hasn't been released to download yet. There will be a new timer board to build, and it can be used with the CDI-powerboard-4 from Rob's old CDI site. The software also hasn't been released yet.. still in testing mode.
Hopefully it will all be released soon.
There will be a new HV board too when that is finished. Check back for more details!

Very nice project - indeed

what do you think about maximum cycles per second ?

i'm just building a V10 F1 engine at 100ccm and planing to use CDI instead of glow plugs ...
but its a long project

without your D.I.Y. CDI its nearly priceless

This pic don't have the memory to make all the options we have in mind, maybe within the next project.
The users can offer some money for the option they want to have.
They vote, make a payment and we try to make this option.

Ideas about HV-boards:
1.The good way is a flyback converter at a 300v output around 555 timer (or something like this).
2.The best way the same flyback converter, tacking generation not from 555 timer but from PIC.Maybe wrong?
