Warbirds Over the Pacific-Oregon
I am the CD for the Warbirds Over the Pacific in the beautiful state of Oregon. The event was created to honor one of the founding fathers of our club in the Willamete Valley, The South Lane RC Modelers. Nestled in Cottage Grove, OR, we fly off a grass 600 ft. runway sitting behind the Plum Creek Tree Farm. We hold this event every year now to honor veterans of foreign wars. Guy Oliver, one of our oldest members (now deceased) flew 81 missions against the Japanese in WWII. He earned the DFC, The Air Medal, and two purple hearts. He was shot down 70 miles out to sea after 2 zeros silently dogged the Corsairs from an attack at Rabaul or Bouganville. They pulled up from below and blasted the two American fighters on the outside of the finger four they were flying. His Corsair bucked and blew into flame filling the canopy with that of a blast furnace. With clothing melted to his skin, Guy rolled over on it's back and fell out of the burning plane to land in the sea with 3rd degree burns. IT was his 81st mission and his last. He came home to live the rest of his life feeling like he done his job. He didn't really know he was a hero and we want all servicemen to come home as whole as they can. Warbirds Over the Pacific is in their honor, we are veteran oriented. The US Marine Corps opens the event every year with the colors presentation very professionally conducted. If you have a scale plane of any type, you are welcome to join us the weekend of July 9th and 10th for a weekend funfly. You get a raffle ticket for everytime you go up! Prizes donated by KMP, Valley View RC, the local hobby shops and more.
