I have a Merco 29 diesel on a CL Wombat. It is ABC, Perry Ported. It runs very steady, but does not seem as powerful as I expected. What propeller would you recommend?

1. Plain case Merco 5 cc diesel;
2. Copy of manual page listing manufacturers propeller recommendation. 10 x 6 or 11 x 4 sizes are recommended.
Recycled, is the prop shaft thread on your later example 1/4 x 26 BSF?

I only posted that pic for clarity and the engine is not mine.
But whilst I am here again I have had talks with other very experienced CL fliers and they reckon that the cylinder taper was all wrong on this model - as in not enough pinch at the top end.
Cheers.

That is unfortunate. New P/L sets for it would be like finding fresh brontosaurus by-product. Perhaps Mr Russell could assist in locating a source.
The plain case .29 diesel engine in post #4 is my own. It has an 'iron and steel' set up. Cross flow porting. Piston has a steep conical crown. Compression seal is excellent. Fits generally are good. The crank web is nicely counter-balanced.
The later black case versions were ABC.
A black case .61 diesel is shown below. It is ABC. Near new, it has noticeable pinch due to cylinder taper. It has a flat topped piston and 'vortex' style porting.

Merco .29 shown in post # 4 has now been run.
Piston/liner and contra piston fits are first class.
An 11 x 6 Master Airscrew gf3 was installed for "first starts". It was too much prop for it.
I then put on a 10 x5 grey Robbe Dynamic gfk broad blade "paddle prop" on it. It was much happier. Video in link below.

Hi Derek
My plain case version was so tight I had to damn near heat it up to turn it over!! I still havent finnished running it in. If I load it up it overheats very quickly, just needs many short bursts.
Would they produce enough power to fly a Nobler ARF??

Hello Brusta.
My example is set up tight. compression is huge after the piston closes off the exhaust by a couple of mm's. When running at near maximum compression exhaust still remained clear to tinges of light blue/green (kero. dye colour). After about 250 mL of fuel through it in several short runs the piston is a nice uniform grey finish with no 'tram tracks', scorch marks or shiny ring at the top.
I suspect It would fly a Nobler quite nicely
I may look through my assortment of 'bits' for old Merco's for a factory Merco C/L venturi and spray bar. I expect I would need to sleeve down the venturi a little to ensure good draw. With the R/C carb at WOT the venturi is a little large to ensure easy starting. Starting manners are better with throttle partially closed.
