Default AP hornet 09 conversion

A couple of these have been on the shelf for a couple of years, do not know if still in production came from Hobby people in Ca. USA just put on a zinger wood 8x4 prime with Davis fuel and a no go on a hand flip, one shot with the starter ran off the prime, retried and a few flips and off did not check rpms since a couple of prime starts only it is a 2 BB engine
head by A J Coholic 2005 or 2006 as I remember about 10.5K on this prop, one of the engines did have poor compression set it back they sent an other, no issues since
think we posted this a few years back martin

One is in a SE5 electro-fly as a converted leckie nice plane wood built up ARF just about done

Post note just had to do it ran 11.1--11.2K with the wood zinger idle about 4800 nice transition light smoke, brown oil out the stack and it is a quiet engine ran in garage too
5:45PM today,as I recall these engines got a little bashing but no issue with mine

I have a glow one that seems pretty good to me. Just a bit quicker than a TD .09. The .09 is likely a good candidate for diesel because the same crank is used for the .15, so it may be strong enough. My .15's rod bottom end got sloppy real fast at 25,000 rpm, but the .09 should be good with the lighter piston.

Aspeed the rod is bushed on the AP I like the can exhaust can rotate to any position by using the provide shim washers, a 7x4 APC may get us to 14K, a para it is not of course, but a sport engine for just flying around fine
quite sure timing and porting quite mild, combat and speed do not think so.finish and fit good martin

I never would have expected 25000 out of a 15AP what prop size??

Fletcher Cox TD .09 diesel.

Much re-engineering in this one, it is not just a conversion head.

I used an F2D combat prop. It measured 6.2" x 5" pitch on my guage, and said Alex on it. I think the 7-4 MA prop was around 16,900 or so on glow. I don't have my notes with me as I am in Florida right now for a month or so. I made a turbo head for it and it helped it out a lot. Does that TD have a bigger rod on it? That would be hard to get in.

Aspeed.

The copy below is from page 17 of the 'Engine Gallery' section of Ron Chernich's 'Model Engine News' web site.

"This pair of Cox TD 09 Diesels is the work of Jon Fletcher (Oz). Jon lapped the bores to reduce taper to that acceptable for a diesel. That meant a new piston and conrod assembly. His first attempt used press fit spacers either side of the conrod up inside the piston but after bursting a piston on assembly, Jon changed to wire circlips made from 0.012" diameter piano wire as gudgeon pin retainers. Influenced by Alan Allbon designs, Jon set the pin low in the piston to give a good compression seal.

The gudgeon pin is 0.1250" dia. drilled out at either end. The total reciprocating weight actually ended up less than that of the TD 09's hardened piston and ball joint little end. Jon found he had to fabricate some copper sealing washers out of copper bar 0.008" thick to get a leak free joint between button insert and cylinder internal face. He also had to sleeve the venturis down from 0.133" dia. to 0.106" as the big glow venturi required the needle to be 6-1/2 turns open and raw fuel could be seen going down the inlet when running flat out. Unsurprisingly, the engines had an enormous thirst. With the smaller venturi, the needle position is about 3 turns open.

The engines are very easy to start and go almost as hard as the glow versions on standard diesel mix as the glow version does running 30% nitro. After running in and using contest diesel fuel, Jon expects they will equal or exceed the glows performance."

It appears I am hijacking this thread. My apologies to Martin, I should have started a new one.

Here's a pic of mine. Converted by the late Lance Smith in Melbourne.

In a 1/2A combat wing. Swings a 7X4 Taipan prop at around 16k rpm.

I just love it.

GREEGLES NICE will have to pick up a 7x4 for mine just did a hand flip restart in mine temp 55F fuel bottom of the can Davis so quite sure ether % down after flipping full choke it still went right off after about 10 flips
compression on flipping felt low but it still started it has had a few short runs must have gotten a good piston to liner seal martin

even had to back compression screw out 1/2 turn to get rid of the kickbacks then off it went

I had a PAW 1.5cc in a Electri Fly Fokker VII and it was marginal with an 8X4 prop at 9000 RPM (IIRC). Finally pulled the piston in two trying to maximize performance. This was from Eric Clutton, using his fuel. YMMV

John

There must have been something wrong with your PAW 1.5. Those numbers are low.

My well worn ancient (mid '50's) FROG 149 will turn a Kavan blue nylon 8 x 4 prop at 11,000 rpm.
