Default Sizing help

I have a kit that uses a speed 400 electric motor and would like to build it for my first Diesel. I need to know what size diesel is comparable to the speed 4oo with a 3 to 1 reduction. I Hope I have given enough information. Thanks for your help.

What model are you thinking about converting and what level of performance do you expect from it? There are many variables!

Lets see if I can give any useful info. The kit was made by EZ-Flight out of Canada and is called the Bat. It was designed for a direct drive speed 400 and an 8 cell 1000 mah. pack. I roughly measure the wing area at 225 sq. inches. It is a semi-flying wing with foam cores. The web site is temporarily closed so no formal info is available at this time. The kit is very well done but little in the way of statistics are included. I've seen videos of the plane in flight and was very impressed. I figured this might be a good test bed for a small diesel. I'm NOT interested in speed as much a thrust. I have reached the point in life were a relaxed flight is appreciated. Thanks again for any help you can provide.

From the limited info given I'd say anything from an .049 to an .09 would do the job. Any idea what the flying weight is of the model?

A good choice would be a norvel 061 (break in well on the glow head) and put a davis
diesel head on it , I had one in a global decathon 8x4 master airscrew plane was made
for a speed 400 , I converted it (big deal motor mount and a microservo on throttle)
Awsome first flight but lost in heavy brush and not found palmetto bushs and lots of
coral snakes.

The Norvel might be a good choice as I would be able to switch back to glow if I need to. I wish that I could give more info about the weight but it is not available. I have kind of been wanting to try one of them anyway. Thanks again for your help.

It sounds like the Cox and Norvel engines don't hold up too well to the higher compression of the diesel conversions. Broken rods maybe common? It may be a good time to circle the wagons and wait for an MP-Jett to show up.
