RE: Fox .40 DDD
How do you tell a Big Case from a Small Case from the outside look? Do they both share the same muffler? I need to get a muffler for mine but I don't want to risk buying a wrong one. If anyone here has a muffler you are willing to sell, please PM me.
Thanks Joshua |

Do your engine and Diesel head look like this one, ignore the carb, that is an Irvine carb, this engine is a Fox .46 ABC and yours will look identical if a large frame .40. Also, that muffler is an MVVS 3245 which you might get from Pe' Reivers who posts here at times.

I cannot really tell from this front view. One feature of mine is that the FOX logo on the transfer port is Horizontal, not vertical like on many of their engines. If you can open the attached link you will see it.

RE: Fox .40 DDD
They only made diesel heads for the big crankcase Fox .40, .45 and .50 engines. The small case .40 is only slightly larger than the .25 to .36 size engines. So it is pretty small in comparison to the big .40's etc.
The crankshaft in the small case .40's is a little too small to be reliable as a diesel engine, so there would be a greater risk of having the crank break. But then one can still get parts for 20 some odd year old engines from FOX. Albeit the bushed crank engine parts have dried up now. But the ball bearing engines should still have parts that you can get for them. I think only the earliest BB .40's, from when they were first made, had only the problem with the muffler, as FOX widened the two muffler screws about 2mm after that first batch of engines was made and sold. So the current mufflers won't fit the earliest engines. |

Earl
Did you look at the link to ebay with pictures of my engine? It is in the last post before yours. Joshua |
RE: Fox .40 DDD
Yes I did, your engine looks to be a late 1980's to maybe early 1990's version engine. It has the MK-X carb on it.
It looks new from the pics, it was never mounted or used in a airplane. So it was only test run at the Fox factory. You'll need to break it in. Usually the bearings are still good, but you'll need to flush them out to help remove old congealed castor oil. Worse case is if you have to replace the bearings. Fox used all castor oil in his fuels, so the engines tend to store well for many years like that. I also don't think he used nitro-methane in the engine test run fuel at the factory either. |
RE: Fox .40 DDD
Thanks Earl, Hobbsy and everyone else who helped identify my engine.

RE: Fox .40 DDD
I saw on some other places where you were looking for a muffler for the Fox .40 engine.
You can get one direct from Fox Manufacturing as the current mufflers fit your engine too. The MVVS 6.5cc engine mufflers fit as well. But the hole spacing is maybe 1mm or so off, so you may or may not have to use a jeweler's file to oval the inside of the hole or holes to get them to fit. It depends on how large the screw hole is that the manufacturer drilled. MAC's also sells tuned pipe headers too, like for mousse can mufflers etc. I think the MVVS canister mufflers are good ones to get as they don't restrict the engine much. I installed a BISON MVVS Pitts muffler on the Fox .45 in my Japanese Zero plane. One can also make a bridge adapter and fit most any muffler they want to the engine. I did that a while back with a K&B muffler on one of my Fox .45 engines. |
RE: Fox .40 DDD
Thanks for the kind advice and help Earl. I got a Fox muffler.

This might be another MVVS muffler choice although this one is on a .60, I'm sure they make this in the MVVS .49 size same as Fox .40/.45/.46/.50 etc. The thing about this one is its really cool sound. I know you already got one but thought I'd let you give this a look.

RE: Fox .40 DDD
That looks suspiciously like a homelite chainsaw muffler:D

RE: Fox .40 DDD
Running a master 11/6. Don't know the rpms as I have ended up throwing away about five of those digital tachs because they last about as long as a remote meat thermometer.

RE: Fox .40 DDD
:D Ive had my Tower Hobbies tach since the pre cambrian ....
Put new batteries in about 10 years ago ... Thing won't quit |

Hey Max, it looks like it but it lacks the US Forestry spark screen.
I broke down and got one of those TNCs by Fromeco, I had a Globee for a long time, I still have it, the Globee and TNC read exactly the same. The Globee is actually better for taking pictures. |
RE: Fox .40 DDD
I have accumulated several tachs over the years.
My old time favorite is the classic Heathkit Thumb Tach that I put together ages ago. But it only works in broad daylight out in the sun. I have a little Hobbico tach, and it is a daylight only tach too. It works OK, but its problem is the expensive watch batteries it uses. But I recently discovered the local Dollar Store was selling 12 packs for a $1.00 each. The cheap batteries can't be any worse than the Radio Shack super expensive ones. If it didn't drain the batteries so fast it might have been more useful. But it always seems to be dead when you want to use it. Then I have a Glow Bee too, but it is a daylight only tach as well. I also have a Fromeco TNC tach and it is well worth the cost. You can get tach readings three feet away from the prop in the shade. But if you are under shade tree and it is windy and letting the sunlight flicker through the leaves, you can sometimes get odd erratic readings, but it recovers well. I also have a Kyosho car laser tach too. You have a piece of shiny foil tape on the engine's flywheel or something and it reads that for RPMs. |
RE: Fox .40 DDD
I guess I'm gonna have to break down and get a tach. I can always explain to the wife that its a tool to make sure the fan in the convection oven is operating at optimum speed. In reality, mine probably broke because they were in the bottom of the flight box and had fuel dripped on them and tools throw on top of them. This time I'll give it the care it deserves.[8D]

RE: Fox .40 DDD
Max stick in a cheap cell phone or small digital camera case you can get them for about$5 at big lots , dollar store or similar outlet thats how I keep mine
jut take it with you to find one that fits martin mine lives in a discarded blood glucose meter case a customer came into the drug store and needed a new one, said just chuck the old one its shot, tossed the meter kept the case ( nice one with a zipper) |
RE: Fox .40 DDD
I've kept my tach in the box it came in. It looks pretty now (the box) but the tach is still like new. It uses those watch batteries ... quite a few of them. Inconvenient when they need to be replaced but mine have lasted a very long time

RE: Fox .40 DDD
I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to add that I finally ran the engine today. I got the proper Fox muffler for it and replaced the RC carb with a CL one. 9,700 rpm with a Top Flite 13-5 wide blade prop. By far the strongest 40 diesel I have ever ran! My best OS 40 FP was getting 8,700 rpm with the same prop.

RE: Fox .40 DDD
N99JH Awsome, that carb setup on fox is nice, very easy to switch cabs back and forth between c/l and r/c carbs with their mounting plate system and its all Fox
martin A few years back Davis hoofed it over to Fox and a lot of testing done at Fox with his heads |
RE: Fox .40 DDD
Thanks Martin. I never had a Fox before but knew that they are powerful engines (Hardly lookers though:)
I expexted good performance but what I saw was a very pleasant surprise. I plan to have it installed in a 60 size CL stunt model. I just love diesels. Best Regards Joshua |
RE: Fox .40 DDD
I forgot to post a link to a video I made of me bench running my Fox .45 engine which was converted to a diesel and also using Fox's latest new carb design on it too.
The fuel was Davis Diesel Development Fuel and the prop is a Master Airscrew 12x8 prop. It actually turns the 12x8 prop at about the same RPMs as my Saito .80 turns a 12x8 prop. I have a bunch of Fox 40,45 and 50 engines I am still trying to wear out, I am not succeeding either. :D |
