Default laser arrow and eagletree data recorder

Hi,

This winter I will make some brainstorming around the accoustic speed mesurement method. I plan to develop some friendly soft working live.
In order to find some parameters I need a backup speed info.
That's why I invested in a eagletree stuff.
I instaled it in a laser arrow and I will take this oportunity to tell you the real speed of that plane.
Actualy it's fit with a magnum 45 standard exhaust turning APC 9*7
after speed mesurement have been made with that engine i'll switch to a 61 FX.

feel free to ask me to install any prop on those combo just to see........ (don't ask me to buy similar engine than your )

actualy I estimate the top speed around 100 MPH with the magnum 45 (maybe a bit less), we will see as soon the weather is ok if my estimation is correct.

I also bet that the top speed won't increase a lot with a .61 FX

thats assuming the Eagle Tree is right better get a fast car to follow it and read the speedo
nice project, can't wait to see the results and see if the doppler can be trusted

Phil,

The doppler method is certainly more accurate than the eagletree stuff as soon you are able to correctly read the spectrograph.
the doppler method involve less measuring equipement than a eagletree stuff and is purely mathematic based.
the only incovenient is that it measure a ground speed (like the gps and the radar gun) the eagletree system measure the thrue airspeed........

By the way here is the first trial of the eagletree system

It was freezing this morning and I forgot my gloves home, so I made a short flight.
the sky was overcasted at 1000 Ft. I made that flight using 10 procent nytro APC 9*7 I am unable to give you my RPM because there was not enough light for my photocel rpm measuring tool and I don't have the eagletree racer expander (I will order that stuff now !!)
I tuned the engine with my ears and eyes (smoke and noise)

I made a very short flight and as you can see I reached the top speed of 93 MPH exiting a moderate dive

that's exactly the speed I was expecting !!!

I also pulled up a vertical who bringed me to a maximum recorded altitude of 894 ft, at this time the plane was disapearing in the clouds.

the unit recorded one glitch one elevons when I switched the system on and numerous glitches on my throttle servo. I have a old servo on my throttle.

more infos when the weather will be better

here is a screenshot of the display as it appear at the end of the playback. you can see the max altitude and airspeed display and the total amount of glitches.

I choose to not display the stick position because the soft doesn't support elevon mixing yet and the display is completly wrong, the artificial horizon also. (I exchanged some emails with eagletree support during setup and they said they are working to a software update )

Default RE: laser arrow and eagletree data recorder

here is a view of the display during the flight playback with stick display on

at this moment the plane was stabilised in level flight at full power showing a airspeed of 80 MPH

that's amazing, when I see the airspeed indicator during playback I can say that the cruising speed of a laser arrow with a .45 is the same than the cruising speed of a full scale 65HP piper cub

arwwww, it's like that every winter here, we olny fly with gloves when we're out sloping
so are you able to prove the doppler is accurate using your onboard system? allowing for wind of course...
for me the problem with the doppler is getting the right recording. i dont think it's goo enough to recorde a plane flying past you 20 feet away, my meathod of putting the mic out and getting LOW passes over it is the best i've found so far, but it's not perfect.

as close you pass from the recorder as accurate is the spectrum ( I don't talk here about the potential of your record to ear the noise, but only about the error due to the offtrack course regarding the recorder)

my soft will allow to enter distance from the recorder to the plane, this parameter will be entered before the flight and you will be supose to pass at that distance. that is the best we can do for accuracy

SALMONBUG

anychance you could try a APC 10*6

i have a arrow with a ST G51 with standard pipe and i would like a rough guess on how fast its going

so far i have found this to be the best prop

ive also tried 9*6 9*7 9*8 but the 10*6 seems faster??

to me it looks faster with a 9/7 (on my engine) but i'll fly it tomorrow with a apc 10/6 and a 9/7 and record both flights.

I'll shouldn't say i'll do that tomorrow, I should say next year !

Happy new year to all of you and many happy landings for 2004

Default RE: laser arrow and eagletree data recorder

Ok nice begining for 2004

I went to the field this afternoon with the arrow and a 10*6 bolted on it for some records as per miskin request.
the sky was clear but the temp was very cold. I started the engine and launched the bird. I let it accelerate a bit and pulled up gently. The bird went 90 degrees verticaly into the ground. You should have seen my face at this moment.[X(]
I stuplidly looked to my transmiter and readed the fatal sentence " MODEL : DIAMOND DUST "

It hapen........ This must hapen one day in a modeler life, it hapened to me today.......
I ATE MODERN TRANSMITERS !!!!!!!!

Ok I examinated the debris and altough the bird look relatively in one piece, absolutly all the ribs cracked because of the impact. I could fix it but it will take more time than to frame up a new one (if I want to fix it correctly). The arrow kit is a very fast build and a cheap plane, that's why I went to the LHS on the way back from the field and bought a kit.

I started on it already.

Will fly monday, you bet ?

I will download the (short) flight file and post a screen shot showing the moment of the impact

In the car I was thinking "I could build the new one exactly the same color scheme than the old one, and nobody on rcuniverse will see a diference. I won't look totaly idiotic to other members ".
But I decided to be honest and to post

here is a pic of the plane and a pic of the new one I started 30 minuts ago

You know how we react after a crash. We are very disapointed and see everithing with a catastrophic point of vue

I am removing the equipement of the arrow and I realise that damages aren't so dramatic and that the plane can be fixed in 3 or 4 hours.........

the only big issue is to remake a nice top covering with the fins in place, that's my only concern

Here you can see the stupid head of a guy able to take off with the wrong program in the radio.
My wife took this pic this morning after I came back from the field.
I played a nice "dust in the snow party " with my 46fx powered diamond dust

I said fly on monday, but it won't be the case. Altough I can fix my crashed arrow, I decided to build the new one with a os 60fx in the nose. So I will have the two versions.

here is a pic of the new one I framed up those last two days. Took a bit more time than expected because I made some mods

1) reinforce the front fuselage and tank aera with extra sheeting and a ply firewall instead of the balsa one.
2) tri stocks everiwhere on the engine mount
3) antena tube (like on the first one)
4) extra acces hatch in the aft top of the center of the wing for more backward battery instalation (to balance with the .60 in the nose)
5) cleaner instalation of the data recorder

color scheme will be exactly like the .40 one except the clear top covering will be red instead of blue.

the .60 arrow fit with the eagletree stuff is waiting for nice weather

this thing required a TON of lead to balance and turned out very heavy []

4.6 Lbs............

I am curious to see how will the launch turn

that one nice plane you have there [8D]

i wish mine looked like that

how much weight did you have to add to balance it ??

my friend has a rapier ARTF with a MDS 48 he had to add 1LB of lead at the back to balance it []

its a bit of a pig to hand launch[:@]

i dont know the exact weight of my arrow weigh but im sure its under 4LB

sure your is under 4. My .45 version balanced fine without lead (I'll start to fix it soon I promised my friend)

I didn't weighted the lead I instaled, I only weighted the entire bird

hey ! your arrow look nice !
