Default Chuck Auger Prop selection

From my reading you seem like the guy to ask so here goes.

I have a sonic 500 from hobby people. Its a basic quickee 500 no vtail type plane. Yesterday I broke in a new OS 46 ax with a 10x6 and at theend of the first tank I was getting 15.5 k rpms. Oh it also has a tower muffler on it. Then I put an 9x8.5 on it and she moved pretty good. It reminded me of my wiplash for a second.

What prop will yield the highest speed and if not readily available can you make me one please. Glad to pay you for your time.

Regards Robert Sando

We race that engine on the same type of planes. APC makes several props that work well.

8.8" x 8.75
8.75" x 9 W

These two definately work well and are available from either APC or you can get them at www.pspec.com

Yeah, don't get me to lying!! The props I modify are for a lot larger engines. There are plenty of off the shelf props for engines in your size range. The only reason I even started modifying props was because there are no commercially available props in the size/pitch I wanted to try.

For this size engine, I would highly recommend that you follow daven's suggestions..he has LOADS more experience on the .46 sized engines on planes similar to yours.

Just for reference, we are turning the 8 3/4" x 9 W on that engine at roughly 16,300 RPM.

The New AX seems a bit more powerfull than the FX.

The 9W at 16,300 looked closer to 125 mph than 150 mph. However, I didn't have a radar gun at the field to check. We'll get readings this summer.

My calcs put it at 138.9 MPH [sm=stupid.gif]

Same RPM, with an 8 pitch would put it in the 125 MPH range.

You don't have drag....do you?
