Default TT 46 on Aresti With Tuned Pipe/Setting

I tried to fly the Aresti today and it leaned up in the air and lost power. I think it was coming on the pipe too quick because it sounded like it was on the pipe on the ground on take off and never gained the rpms it should have had in the air. This is my first tuned pipe and I am not sure what I should do now. Sould I cut another 1/4" off the header? It was running at 17500 on ground with 9X7 APC with 15% nitro. I thought I had it rich enough prior to flying.

If I'm not mistaken, you are running the engine well past its recommended max rpm's...be careful...

Don't start cutting yet....you have to set the engine richer on the ground
because it will lean out when it comes on the pipe, as you have already seen.

Another word of caution. I do not know what type of APC prop you are using. However in the prop size range mentioned APC manufacturers two types of grey props. The average sport prop has a "C-2" designation on the front of the hub. Props meant for higher rpm use have a 'D-1" designation on the front of the hub. If you are using the "C-2" at high rpm be carefull they have been known to throw blades.

Today I found my problem I think. I took it to the field and a man there with some tuned pipe experience said indeed it is running lean by listening to it on the ground so we played with high speed needle and no change. He said to open the low speed needle 1/2 turn and I did. This made a tremendous difference. The low speed needle was set for a regular muffler and it was starving the engine now with the tune pipe requiring more fuel than the regular muffler. He said to also use a 9X7.5 to help load the engine some to keep it from coming on the pipe so soon also. I will fly it next week to see how it is going to work. I did start to have trouble cranking it with the inverted engine I may have to crank on side and place on the ground but at least it is getting plenty of fuel now. I just hope I haven't cut the pipe to short.

Did you reinforce the aresti's tail feathers? Be careful. Mine is still in one piece, but they can break if overstressed at high speed. (ya ya this is an old thread, but what the heck...)

Yes it is an old thread, but anyone with an Arresti needs to know about the
weak tail feathers. Cut down the too big elevator to avoid the flutter, and
reinforce the horiz. stab.

The Arresti isn't much of a plane....it looks good. It is snappy, and flies
inverted like a red brick. Tight out of the box it will self destruct on it's own.
The plane obvoiusly wasn't tested....

....but it looks good.

Yeah I agree, looks great but flies very unpredictable. I had wing drops and jolts like there was radio interference before it spiraled uncontrolably to the ground. I did a frequency check and all ws good there. real bummer. It made me rethink my existance. Im just now cleaning up. I like patterns. any recomendations?

Early on, the Arresti was billed as a "pattern trainer plane". The guy who said that
was either smoking crack, or is in a rubber room.
