Default Effect of Wheel/Wheelpants on Speed

For you speed freeks. What is your opinion on the effect of wheels/wheelpants on a planes top speed - keeping everything in reason. Putting it another way - do wheel pants help hurt or basically have no major effect.

They are a necessary evil with some forms of the hobby. For sport flying speed, if you have a nice grass field to work with, and you are serious about getting the most bang for your buck, running your plane clean is the only way to go. If I want to shoot touch and goes, I'll get out the fun fly plane. I think wear and tear wise, a Q500 with a glassed belly for grass landings will outlast one with the pizza cutters hanging down that lands on asphalt.

landing gear/wheels create a lot of drag. This is very easy to see in a full scale aircraft when the gear is lowered. Anything to clean up the airflow will help. Speed changes from wheel pants alone may not be very noticable from an RC pilots point of view.

Adding wheel pants....or streamlining the bare wheels is always beneficial from
a performance standpoint....an increase in speed....but in full scale planes, an
increase in fuel mileage which is even more important.

Dave.
