RE: Extreme Speed Eindecker
Not yet, weather has been pretty good, so it will get flown within the next month. It took first place at our annual builders show in our racing class. I will give an update after it flies.

RE: Extreme Speed Eindecker
He might be heading to FL. for a race this weekend, but he did win a builder's show trophy for the "racing" class at our last club meeting of the year.
I imagine it will fly as well as a 47" ,3.5lb Jett equipped quickie with a round tail. He did a nice job with the light glass and paint.

RE: Extreme Speed Eindecker
Put the radio in it this morning, and charged the batteries. Wish it was 3 1/2 lbs, came in at a VERY porky 4 lbs 1.3 oz. I had to put the battery in front of the tank, and move everything as far forward as I could to get it to balance. I'm at about 3 1/8" behind the LE, so its close, maybe a tad tail heavy, but good enough.
Its windy, cloudy, cold, and dreary, but it may get flown today.
I'll give an update later if it flies or dies.

RE: Extreme Speed Eindecker
I flew it twice today.
The first flight I left it VERY rich and gunned it into the wind. It trimmed out nearly perfectly with only a couple clicks of aileron needed.
The throws were VERY hot, both aileron and elevator. I made some big sweeping turns, I ran out of gas shortly due to the rich setting and had a tough turn back into the wind to land. I missed the runway landing in the soft mud where the corn rows go. Other than a little dirt on "Heinrich" the pilot's spike, everything was good to go. I lowered the throws on elevator and aileron and flew again.
This flight, the ailerons were a little slow, and the elevator was still too hot. With a full pull of elevator on knife the plane would skid through the turn and the tail would drop. I think I added too much positive incidence in the vertical stab.
I made a nice landing on the middle of the field and taxied into the pits
I added some aileron throw, and need to move the pushrod on Elevator closer to the servo to take out throw. I must have made the elevators a little too big.
Any guesses on speed? I've watched a lot of speed planes, and radared many others. I would definately estimate top speed around 140 mph +/- 10 mph
Not bad for an eindecker. If I get the throws right, and lean out with the right prop, 150 is definately possible.
Fun project!

Cool,
Sounds like it will be a fun 1 once the gremlins are sorted out.
Probably flys faster than the original 1 did back then !!!!!
Tony.

I do so enjoy your group of nut cases!!! Makes me feel a little more normal in my crazy sceems for our club raceing. Your stuff is very interesting in concept. Went to jump school at Benning in the 50's with a group of marines while in the 101 Airborne. Gained my respect at toward the end of school, several of the jar heads ended up in the top of our class. At the time the marine guys were not well prepaired for jump school, our first 5 mile run in the morning left a bunch falling on their face and not makeing it, was running in the soft sand. ENJOY Rever bro 119

RE: Extreme Speed Eindecker
I went to Benning for some training in 1989 while in the USMC. They had a leadership course there, and we got to Rappel and slide the wire across the river, I don't remember what the Rivers name was, not many in Georgia though. Got to fly there in Blackhawks from the logistics base in Albany, GA. highlight of the trip.
I could run then, I'd be falling on my face after about 1/2 mile now.

RE: Extreme Speed Eindecker
Annual Warbird race was held yesterday, and the Eindecker came out on top with a 1st place finish. Beating Mustangs, Zeros, Corsairs, AT-6's, and a peculiar F-16 in Blue Angels trim.
Quite a bit faster than any of the other contenders. Unfortunately, our rules are going to be overhauled for this race for 2007, and the Eindecker has officially been declared ineligble for next year.
A bit of work, but it was good fun. The Eindecker will be sold in the near future as I no longer have a use for it, and its not all that fun to fly.
It is not without faults.
The vert stab is bit small and I think is blanked out by the pilot.
I made the elevator TOO big and requires extremely small amounts.
She's Porky (4 lbs 1.3 oz)
I built in too much right thrust in the rudder, it likes to fly tail down and will snap pretty violently in a hard turn at high speed.
Lands like a brick.
Hard to make turns at slow speeds.
Iron Crosses on one side are starting to peal from the fuel residue.
Green Metallic paint is impossible to keep clean from fingerprints, even with a nice wax job.
