RE: Diamond Dust Modified
I mixed my epoxy really good before I added the micro balloons. I had no problems so I really don't understand why it won't work for you also.

There is no reason regular glass microballoons should chemically inhibit epoxy cure. In fact, if you use the phenolic microballoons (the red colored stuff) often catalyze a faster cure reaction - 5 minute with red microballoons cures fast and ends up very tough and tenacious. With regular microballoons in a thin cross-section, the thin-film cure time might increase I suppose - localized mass plays a role in cure rate, as epoxies exotherm as they cure and the more mass in one area the quicker the cure with less surface area to radiate heat. I am not suggesting they get hot to the touch in small quanitites, but the temperature still rises somewhat, and cure rate is highly affected by temperature. In large quanitites they do get hot; as part of product specifications for a resin/curative system you will sometimes often find peak exotherm temperatures quoted for a mass of the material of several hundred degrees. I once saw a fellow mix a quart of epoxy and medium rate curative, and subsequently freak out as it got hotter and hotter and eventually turned into a stinking, smoking charred mass. He mixed less on the next try. MJD

RE: Diamond Dust Modified
I'm finally getting around to posting photos of my completed Diamond Dust. It is covered with Ultracote. I've had it done for several months but it has not made it's maiden flight.

WD:
How many hours total have you put into building the Dust (including installing servoes, engine, etc.). I was thinking about buying a kit, and wondered what the total time load is going to be?
Thanks,
Mike

RE: Diamond Dust Modified
ORIGINAL: WD
Here are some pictures of a Diamond Dust that I am building. I plan on covering it in the next few days. It is powered by a Jett .50 FIRE with a full pipe, Tettra 8.5 oz. bladder fuel tank, Hitec HS-5645 servos for the elevons and a Hitec HS-225 servo for the throttle.
I made access covers out of 1/16" ply for the receiver/battery, servos/switch, and throttle servo areas. The sheeting between the fins has been reinforced on the top and bottom with ply to prevent crushing when hand launching. I also added some balsa with 1/2" cap strips between the ribs and along side the spars to provide more surface area for the covering to adhere. A 1" wide roll of Coverite is supplied with the kit for this, but I just thought the balsa would be better.....we'll see. The engine mount has been laminated top and bottom with carbon fiber cloth.
I will post some additional pictures after the covering is applied.

My dad will be posting soon of what he did a couple of days ago on his modified DD.
The thickness of the leading edge of the wing is the same all around the wing so its a thin winged DD.

That looks real nice and all on you DD and I respect it, but that looks like a lot drag when putting that reinforcement in.

What the ???
I don't get it, how would you put the servo's in place if there isn't a hard point for the servos to bolt into. I thought it was a smart way to put the servos in there where the ply plates are.

[color=#0000FF]Hi All,
Thanks to the ideas I copied from Bill and others here, my DD is a rocket ship, the engine is a real blast and getting better every flight.
I first flew it at a flyin in Henderson, Ky. a couple weeks back and let some of the folks/friends fly it, everyone only had good things to say about the DD and engine setup.

Nice Remote installation. If you still get some bubbles in the line due to heat or vibration, you might try a piece of thin plywood between the new bracket and the remote for additional insulation. I tried it years ago in a F-1 racer--just used 1/32--and the problem disappeared instantly
