RE: (Something Fast?) Delta Build Thread
I have been having too much fun flying and taking the kid to the park/beach/zoo/circus so progress was slower than usual. I made up some time figuring out my servo mounts, linkage covers, and winglets. Everyone likes carbon "Bling" so I made some nice parts with it. Those winglets are 3mm Depron foam sandwiched with 5.5oz carbon. They weigh 18 grams a piece and are super stiff. I will need to close up the bottom and finish the servo hatches as well as the fuel tank hatch and top sheeting.

Thanks guys! I'm going to get it flying first minus the 'full cowl' but the front of the motor behind the spinner has a smooth transition right now. I am finishing up beefing up the mount rails and fuel proofing the engine compartment. I will begin covering in the next couple nights.

RE: (Something Fast?) Delta Build Thread
Hi guys, I got a copy of the plans from Mike (thanks again) and proceded to scratch build a Demon. I am very happy with this plane, flys great at all speeds, needed only 2 clicks of aileron and 1 of elevator to get it trimed in, so I guess my building is not perfectly straight. I have a Irvine 40 on it with a 9x7 prop and JEN 47 muffler, not super fast but the estimated speed at the club seems to be around the 100mph mark maybe a little quicker. I am going to get a MVVS Quickie 40 engine for it, so with the pipe and the right prop we should be looking at some good speed. Overall very happy and look forward to getting some more speed out of it (I think there is plenty more to come). Club speed record is in serious danger me thinks.
Cheers
Andrew
P:S last pic shows current setup Irvine 40, tuned pipe and 9.75x7.5 prop. Not flown yet but expect it to be quicker.

I have been working steady on the Demon and finally finished covering. There are really only minor things to finish up before I get to fire it up and go for a maiden. I did another Tiger scheme to match my Yak 54. My aim was visibility... [8D]

Looks SUPER TROY! That is a delta-man's delta. I'm not sure what a cowl would add to it at this point, it already has that evil, wicked, mean and nasty muscle car look. Checking the speed difference is always interesting, though. I'll wager you spend 20 hours on the engine cover and gain 1 mph?

Looks real good! Not just a slamed together delta.....a lot of time and thought. What's the weight or wing loading?
I sure hope you have many hart pounding flights[sm=tongue_smile.gif]

I noticed your header is still long. Cutting the pipe and ground testing props is a PITA on the plane so I built a quick & dirty test stand to bolt down to something that wount fly away. I used fuse top header like yours (not pictured below), both header and pipe had to be cut to get the short length.

Mike, Today I ran out of excuses and maidened the Nelson Q40 Screamin Demon. I did not get a doppler recording. I was too busy just keeping my eyes on it to do anything else but I must say she was very fast. I had too much aileron even at the low rate setting but made a couple laps that got everyone up on their toes. She was a little too squirrely to get a good straight level pass but everything was fine once back on terra firma. I will take it back up tomorrow with the ailerons toned down and some more expo. I know what fast is and this thing is a rocket. It should actually be fun once I get things dialed in. The cowl works excellent with absolutely no overheating on the ground or in the air. I will get a doppler recording once I get comfortable with the speed. This thing really cooks! Like nothing I've ever flown before. Engine tached 21,500 static ( 500 rpm off peak ) but once it cleared the catapault launcher she really started to make that distinctive howl that is music to a "speed freak's" ears. Belly landing on summer's torched grass was uneventful and without a scratch to the underside. The Perry R/C 5001 throttle type "mega carb" works perfectly and is nice so you can shut down the engine and have the intake completely closed to keep any dirt/debris out on landing. Not really a throttle but more of an "on/off" type panic switch without shutting the engine completely down when flying. Sorry it took me so long but it took a long time for me to decide that only I would be making the maiden flight. No guts...no glory! I must admit...I realized my manhood had disappeared after landing! My compliments to you on your design. I will keep you posted.

RE: (Something Fast?) Delta Build Thread
Hey guys, I finally finished my scratch built Lickety split. I believe I'm the first one to fly one with electric power. I just got back from the field, was able to only get the maiden flight in because I believe my motor has a bent shaft or something. It has been involved in ground contact. It flew very well at half throttle, after a rocky launch, little wild but settled down nicely. Seems like it will fly a lot slower than my shrike did. Landing was real good, floated halfway across our field before it finally settled in. I'm gonna love it when I get my motor fixed. It has an Axi 2826/08, 70 amp jetti speed control, and 11.1 volt 4000 mah lipo. I don't have a good scales but my fish scale says under 3 lbs with battery installed. Heres a few pics notice I put some finger holes in the bottom for launch seemed to work great. I still want to trim it out some more, just had to fly it once. Thanks mike for a great design. skyflyer

Denny,
Glad you finally got it in the air. Yep, at speed you need very low rates and a lot of expo. Actually, after a few flights the pucker factor will diminish and it will be a blast to fly. I hope you are able to get a video with good sound for a Doppler speed check. You did an outstanding job on the build and I would love to see it fly. Please keep us informed.
Skyflyer47,
Congratulations on getting the first full size Lickety Split Electric in the air. It looks like you did a really good job on your scratch build. The electric motor makes it easy to build a clean airframe. I will be looking forward to a high speed flight report after you get the motor issues worked out.

I would like to see it fly too! At full throttle it requires my full concentration. The ground is always too easy to find but it will dissapear into the blue sky quickly if I take my eyes off of it. Good sound will definately not be a problem. This thing is deafeningly loud. I always use ear protection as part of my safety procedure and recommend this to all you guys running these engines. As we get older we recognize how important our hearing is. Don't take it for granted along with your eye protection. You can not dodge a speeding bullet unless in fact you are Superman.

RE: (Something Fast?) Delta Build Thread
Maiden Report!! I guess it was a good weekend for maidens on the Demons. Mine went quite well requiring only a few clicks of down and a couple on the ailerons. I flew about 1/2" forward on the CG and it was rock solid, will be moving back on next flights. I ran first flight on 15% and a 8X6 APC. First flight was run rich with a noticeable smoke trail behind but it was moving. Motor ran great but never really got on the pipe until I did a steep dive. When it did catch the pipe it jumped forward in speed in a hurry. Will be trimming down the header some more since it is still looking a bit long. Handling characteristics were really nice. I flew it on my low rates ailerons and roll rate was still good... I think 1/4" up and down. Elevator was on high rates with about 3/8" up, 1/2" down. Ran about 40% expo on ailerons. Once dialed in was very smooth and came down to the deck solid as a rock. I guesstimate in the 160mph range but will need to get the motor running at peak. Got two flights in Sunday and tried one more tonight but something is acting up in the carb. I have a few things to work on anyway before next flights but I can definitely call this weekend a success. Can't wait to get video!!
