Why don't you just putt a Jett in there and be done with it.

Mark,
The only real way to find the optimum pipe setting is by experimenting with the length. I don't remember what I ran the pipe at on my YS60's when I flew pattern, or my 61's for that matter, but I think your 60 should have more in it, you might need to change the pitch on your prop though as well, I know with my YS60's, they would unload better with a little less pitch to the point that it was actually a speed advantage over the next higher pitch loading the engine down that much more.

As for your pipe, cut 1/2" off the header and check the RPM again, if you gain RPM then cut another 1/2" off, if it stays the same or goes down put the piece back into your coupler and your pipe is where you want it to be. If you get a small RPM increase (less than 1000) then cut smaller pieces, 1/8" to 1/4". It can be a long process. Sadly, if you change props, nitro content etc, your pipe may not be optimal any more either.

I really don't remember what RPM or prop I was running on my YS60's, but I think it was around 15,000 with an 11x8 or 9. I know my YS61AR's were about 11,000 with a 12x12N on them but they were a long stroke motor so the lower RPM was correct.

Hello, LGM Graphix, Thanks for the explanation. I thought that someone out there might have run this engine, prop, pipe combo and would be able to save me the long process of cutting,measuring,cutting,measuring...

Hard to find a Rossi-46 there Mark. What engine are you suggesting has more power than the Jett-50?

151MPH with the YS? Hmmm...

Long live the Patriot-40, to the bigger Patriot I would send them to the gallows, sorry Wayne.

Does anyone have any experience in cutting down an APC prop? I am running an APC 11x9 on my YS 60, and was considering cutting down an APC 12.5x12.5 to a 10x12.5, to see if it will give me more speed. What do you speed experts think?

There was a thread not long ago started by one of those German speed freaks. He made his own CF props and talked about not cutting down a factory prop. especially by a couple of inches. Plus he talked about over squared props. You might try a search.

Wow, I do not believe a YS-60 would be quicker than a Jett-50 or 60 on the smaller Patriot. Sorry-

I flew my Patriot friday.Experienced some problems with engine and retracts because of the cold temp.(23degrees).After I coaxed the engine to start I had a great flight, but when it was time to land the nose gear would not come all the way down. The nose retract was damaged and the 11x9 APC prop broke. My next flight was with the wheels down and with an APC 12.5x12.5 prop.cut down to a10.25x12.5.To my suprise the patriot seemed to fly a little faster with this prop.and the wheels down than with the APC 11x9 and the wheels retracted.

Sorry there is no way your YS powered Patriot is faster than say a Jett-60LX powered Pat. The YS-60 long or short stroke is a great engine but cannot turn the RRR's that the Jett's can. 11x9 spinning what RPM?

Just to be clear I have owned and flown YS-60's and Rossi-60's, they are beasts but on a small ship like a Patriot-40, no way friend.

My old YS 60 engines could really scream given the right prop/pipe ... and the chance.....

I had one that would give the Jett 90L a run for its money..... turned a D&W 11x8 or 11x9 verrrrrry well. (usually, passing noise at the pattern contest was right-on-the-edge).

I still have one of my RE YS60 engines and a Hatori 605 pipe ..... going in the Aurora again (if i ever find time for the restoration...)

Wanted to add.... I still think a properly configured/build Patriot .40 with a 60LX so it would exceed the speed capability of the YS60 setup. A properly "prepard" 9x9 prop turning at 18,000 up front would be a start. Then it is a matter of attention to detail on the airframe. Just a balance of prop/engine/airplane.

Hello,bob27s,I have to agree with you.The YS60 is one of the strongest 60's out there. They are also very dependable, too bad this engine is no longer available. Razor-RCU,do you really think that a jett50 has more power than a YS 60?You have got to be kidding! The jett50 is one great engine, but more power than a YS60, I dont think so.Unless you sprinkle a little pixie dust on jett 50,then it would be more powerfull than the OS90DF.

Hello SpeedBoy, no I did not tach. my engine with that prop, however the RPM was lower than the 11x9 prop.I will cut the prop down to 10" and see if that makes adifference.
